Summary

About the role

Led by the Artistic Director (Exhibitions), the Exhibitions department is responsible for the research, planning and delivery of exhibitions in Ikon’s main galleries at Brindleyplace. It is also responsible for the planning and delivery of public programmes, publications, national and international partnerships related to Ikon’s exhibitions. Occasionally the department leads the conceptualisation and delivery of off-site projects with colleagues across the organisation.

The Curator is a vital role at Ikon, supporting the Artistic Director (Exhibitions) in the research, planning, delivery and fundraising for exhibitions and public programmes. They lead on the conceptualisation and delivery of selected exhibitions, working with artists and guest curators on the development, selection and interpretation of artworks. In consultation with the Artistic Director (Exhibitions), they initiate exhibitions and curatorial projects spanning regional and international contemporary art, the intersection of curatorial and education practice, and that reflect the cultural diversity of Birmingham and the West Midlands.

As department manager, the Curator oversees the effective administration of exhibitions, including organisation of transport and insurance, registrar duties, and the production of associated publications. The Curator is supported by, and line manages assistant curatorial staff. They work closely with departments and colleagues across Ikon and externally to facilitate the effective communication and interpretation of exhibitions.

With a passion for contemporary art, the Curator contributes to the creative life of the organisation, keeping abreast of developments in contemporary art, attending Ikon’s public programmes and exhibition openings, and representing the gallery at external events.
