Summary


An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and proactive Band 7 Paediatric MSK physiotherapist to join our musculoskeletal physiotherapy service. The successful applicant will lead a help in the assessment and treatment of our paediatric musculoskeletal patient, whilst working closely with advanced practice physiotherapists and the clinical manager. Development opportunities include clinical and managerial development through multi-site training, and funded internal & external CPD, including M-level modules.

You will need considerable experience within MSK with proven post-graduate development in this area as well as significant experience in managing a paediatric caseload, alongside experience of managing other staff and students. Strong interpersonal and communication skills will be required as well as the ability to lead a team and the drive and enthusiasm to develop the service. As an innovative individual, you will have the opportunity to be involved or lead on quality improvement projects including pathway redesign and relationship building with primary and secondary care services.
• Assess and treat paediatric patients with a wide range of conditions, who may have complex and/or chronic presentation and to determine a clinical diagnosis and plan physiotherapy programmes and management plans.
• Maintain records as an autonomous practitioner.
• Plan, co-ordinate, deliver and evaluate the service provided to out-patients on a day-to-day basis with a dedicated team.
• Provide specialised physiotherapy and treatment as and when needed.
• Organise own caseload and workload management within the clinical environment.
• Take responsibility for junior staff and assistants working within the team, including case and workload allocation, appraisal and managerial supervision. Delegate duties to junior staff as appropriate.

Clinical and Professional
1. Undertake the specialist assessment of patients, including those with complex and multiple problems, using investigative and analytical skills. Formulate individualised management plans, mutually agreed goals and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options to develop a specialised programme of care.
1. Evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic treatment and modify accordingly.
1. Liaise with Advanced Practice Physiotherapists (APP's), GP's and consultants regarding patient care.
1. Accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients and organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to prioritising according to risk and use of time.
1. Be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work, including management of patients under your care. Ensure high standards of clinical care for patients and support more less experienced staff to do likewise.
1. Communicate effectively with other health and social care professionals in order to facilitate a multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients.
1. Work closely with professional colleagues within Provide and outside organisations to develop Physiotherapy Outpatient Services.
1. Provide specialist advice, spontaneous and planned, teaching and training to relatives, carers and other health and social care members of the wider multidisciplinary team regarding physical management and specialities within community services to promote understanding of the aims of therapy and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.
1. Communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximise potential and ensure understanding of their condition and rehabilitation processes. Many aspects of communication will be required including persuasion, explanation, motivation, empathy and defusing sensitive and stressful situations. There will also be barriers to effective communication such as hearing loss, cognitive loss, pain, altered perception and anxiety / fear.
1. Supervise and instruct more junior staff and Assistants in the clinical environment including case and work load allocation, monitoring and evaluation.
1. Participate in the supervision, teaching and assessment of physiotherapy students.
1. Comply with professional standards of practice in accordance with relevant professional body.
1. Maintain own clinical and professional development (CPD) by keeping abreast of changes and developments in clinical practice and incorporate into the workplace.
1. Be a leading member of the in-service training programme by attendance, and presentation at staff meetings, training sessions, external courses and through reflective practice.
1. Participate in the departments’ clinical supervision program by receiving and giving supervision.
1. Participate in Provides appraisal programme and develop own personal development plan in collaboration with the Service Operational Lead.
1. Undertake the measurement and evaluation of work and current practices through evidence based practice, audit and the use of outcome measures, either individually or with team members.
1. Monitor the changing needs of the service and report these to the Service Operational Lead. Encourage and facilitate audit to ensure the continued development of an evidence based service.
1. Assist the Service Operational Lead in service and policy development.



Education

1. Participate actively, giving expert opinion and support within the Physiotherapy Outpatients Service to meet the clinical needs of the Service and colleagues.

2. To be a designated point of contact for the clinical support of GP’s in the management of musculoskeletal disorders.

3. To work with the APP’s to oversee and deliver high quality training programmes that will meet the needs of the Physiotherapy Outpatients Service.

4. Promote awareness of the profession and education to other disciplines, the general public and media.

5. Contribute to the education of Students on placement within the Physiotherapy Outpatients Service.

6. Identify and deliver training for GP’s and other health care professionals in the management of musculoskeletal disorders.

Clinical Governance

1. Where appropriate, to initiate and participate in appropriate work related research/evaluation of audit projects within the musculoskeletal care pathways.

2. To contribute to the identification of skills and competencies required for Physiotherapy Outpatient Service colleagues.

3. To provide highly advanced specialist physiotherapy advice in the answering of informal and formal patient complaints.

4. To network with other practitioners and colleagues in evaluation of own work and current practices through the use of evidence-based projects, audit, research and outcome measures.

5. Keep abreast of the relevant clinical research issues in the field of musculoskeletal practice and those related to the appropriate level of physiotherapy.

6. Promote awareness of Risk Management in the working environment by Risk Assessment/Interventions to minimise potential risks.

7. Adhering to all policies and procedure within all clinical areas regarding patient Moving and Handling.

8. Attend all mandatory training in line with Trust policies



Communication

1. Working closely with theService Operational Leadand APP’s to review clinical skills and competencies of Physiotherapy Outpatient Service staff.

2. To providing guidance on improving performance and service delivery.

3. To be an active and approachable member of the team giving expert opinion as required.

4. To communicate highly complex patient related information effectively to team members, consultants and colleagues across health and social care sectors.

5. Produce management information as required in the form of timely and informative reports and statistics.

6. Be aware of and contribute to the implementation of IT as a support for clinicians.



Organisational/Management

1. Be responsible for equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy, including competence to use equipment. Report any faults of equipment and to arrange for servicing as appropriate. Be responsible for checking and ordering equipment that is required.



2. Record necessary statistical information as required by Provide or Service Operational Lead.



3. Be aware of Health and Safety and Infection Prevention, and comply with any policies that may be required to improve safety within the work area, including prompt reporting of accidents to the Service Operational Lead.



4. Line manage the associated administrative staff for the locality team



5. Take on delegated responsibilities for the Service Operational Lead.



6. Respond on behalf of the Service Operational Lead to minor complaints received by the out-patient services. Serious complaints and those that cannot be locally resolved need to be escalated to the Service Operational Lead.

1. Moving and handling element of assessing and treating patients with musculoskeletal disorder, sustained postures.



Mental/Emotional Effort

1. Generally dealing with a complex physiotherapy caseload, constant problem solving to support and advise Physiotherapy Outpatient Service colleagues and GPs.

2. Manage effectively the mental and emotional stresses that come with supporting a large team of staff.

3. High level concentration required to assess and manage complex patients who may have multiple pathologies.
