Summary
Clinical Leadership Assistant Chief Nursing Officer Cancer Services: Is an associated member of the Senior Professionals Forum (Nursing, Midwifery and AHP) whose role is to provide leadership and direction to the profession with the Chief Nursing Officer Provides clinical supervision/mentorship including regular professional meetings with cancer clinical nurse specialists and other cancer workforce teams Is responsible for the leadership and management of the Macmillan Wellbeing Centre and PCS team Is responsible with the relevant Deputy Divisional Directors of Nursing / Service Managers for developing new specialist posts and roles in cancer care Is responsible for the implementation of national and local nursing strategies for cancer nursing. Acts as an effective role model and disseminates and shares best practice at local, regional and national level by conference presentation and through publication Leads and participates in relevant cancer care audit, research and development activity, on a multi professional basis Clinical Governance and Quality The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer Cancer Services: Works inter-professionally with colleagues on the implementation of policy that impacts on the cancer patient pathway Actively participates in the development and revision of frameworks for service improvement Should be able to identify potential areas of risk within sphere of responsibility Ensures robust quality improvement projects related to cancer and palliative care are undertaken and disseminates results appropriately Uses the results of audit to effect change in practice at NBT Is expected to contribute to regional and national cancer care developments Strategic Leadership The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer Cancer Services: Provides professional nursing advice relating to general, specialist and strategic policy on cancer nursing issues which may impact the Trust Works strategically with the Trusts senior nursing management team to meet the national cancer nursing agenda and professional guidelines In collaboration with the cancer manager, lead cancer clinician, AHP cancer lead and MDT/Cancer performance manager, as well as with other colleagues (clinical nurse specialists and MDT Lead Clinicians), supports and advises on the implementation of the national cancer measures across the Trust and contributes to regional cancer service delivery planning Provides strategic leadership for PCS initiatives in partnership with a range of healthcare services and external agencies within and external to the Trust and provides strategic oversight for the effective operation of the Macmillan Wellbeing Centre. Acts as the patient experience lead for cancer services and leads on the patient/public involvement strategy for cancer patients ensuring that cancer patients /users views are included in the decision-making process for service developments. Ensures that cancer patent/users views are captured in line with the annual national cancer patient survey. Develops and monitors cancer nursing standards within the Trust in line with national cancer service measures and guidelines Works with the Cancer Services Manager and the Cancer Performance Manager to co-ordinate the preparation for peer reviews (QSIS) involving self-assessment against the national measures. Ensures implementation of any resulting action plans for continuous quality improvement Works with the site specific clinical nurse specialists to develop, implement and review nurse led services at the Trust Engages with the ICB and SWAG Cancer Alliance to identify and cost levels of service provision required for the effective delivery of cancer care at NBT in the future Clinical Effectiveness and Professional Accountability The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer Cancer Services: Maintains an up to date specialist knowledge and accurate overview of current advances in the practice of cancer care and palliative care Ensures their own ongoing professional development Leads specialist clinical practice and service development within own area of expertise, acting as a resource to others, in particular in Divisional Directors of Nursing. Advises the Chief Nursing Officer on all matters relating to the safe delivery of nursing within cancer and palliative care Encourages a philosophy of continuous professional development amongst colleagues, leading by example Represents the Trust to ensure effective communication with nurses and therapists across the region Encourages a research ethos amongst cancer nurses In the Trust working with research and development Management The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer Cancer Services: Provides professional leadership and support for the Cancer and Palliative Care Clinical Nurses Specialists and Macmillan Wellbeing Centre and PCS team in close collaboration with Divisional Heads of Nursing/Service Managers With the Divisional Heads of Nursing/Service Managers, ensures recruitment of cancer nurses is reflected appropriately across the Trust. Undertakes corporate nursing projects across the Trust as required Is responsible for leading on and contributing to the business cases and other bids for developing services in relation to cancer workforce, to include succession planning ensuring effective recruitment reflects the right people/right skills approach Undertakes cancer performance target monitoring, works strategically with the Cancer Services Manager to meet Trust performance management targets, commissioning and government requirements. Ensures the nursing contribution to the Trusts cancer performance management targets Oversees and manages budgets relating to a range of cancer related services and projects Conducts service reviews as required Develops and co-ordinates a Trust wide approach to ensure equal access to cancer care for patients for all cultural backgrounds Education The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer Cancer Services: Leads the cancer education program for the Trust, ensuring core skills are delivered to a high standard and accessible to all, facilitating courses where appropriate Has a comprehensive knowledge of the cancer nurse career pathway and the responsibilities associated with each role to enable assessment of nursing workforce demands and training needs and so be able to develop an education strategy that feeds into the Trusts Nursing, Midwifery and AHP strategy. Provides specialist advice on the development and procurement of specialist training programmes delivered by the Trusts education providers Ensures robust links are made with higher education organisations (UWE as an example) Develops and education strategy in collaboration with Lead Nurses across the region Liaises with a range of external partners e.g. Macmillan Cancer Support and Penny Brohn to provide education and development opportunities for the nursing workforce
