Summary
The Safeguarding Children’s Nurse role plays a key part in safeguarding and promoting the well-being of children through the identification of potentially vulnerable neonates, children and young people. The role entails promotion, intervention and prevention through appropriate onward referral, as well as actively contributing to multi-agency assessment.
The Safeguarding Children’s Nurse is responsible for applying specialist nursing skills and knowledge of children and young people to support and work in partnership, with hospital, community and primary care health professionals. The key role of the Safeguarding Children’s Nurse is to ensure that the health and well-being of children who attend Walsall Healthcare Trust’s Emergency Department are safeguarded. This will be achieved through effective communication and information-sharing between acute, community and primary care settings so that the handover of care and the provision of services for all children and young people are seamless.
The Safeguarding Children’s Nurse will work to identify those children and families who may be particularly vulnerable, especially where there may have been missed opportunities to safeguard or support a child or their family.
· Ensure that The Trust meets its statutory obligation to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children who access services within the Trust.
· Actively participate in the delivery of safeguarding training across all levels of Trust staff, including provision of bespoke training and supporting the Safeguarding Team with safeguarding training development and review.
· To provide specialist advice and clinical support to staff employed and commissioned by the Trust, maintaining appropriate documentation and records. To provide support/supervision, and to be a source of knowledge in the area of safeguarding children.
· Support and promote effective information sharing between acute and community services of children and young people who attend the Emergency Department.
· Visit paediatric and adult EDs daily to discuss any concerns regarding children, or about adults with caring responsibilities for children, who have presented.
· Support the Emergency Department with Mental Capacity Assessments for 16 & 17 year olds.
· Support the named Nurse with MASH lateral checks.
· Support the Safeguarding Team in the development and delivery of quality assurance processes, audits and report writing in accordance with the Safeguarding agenda.
· Support the Safeguarding Team in all aspects of the multi-agency Safeguarding Children Agenda, as deemed appropriate.
The Safeguarding Children Nurse supports the Safeguarding Team in ensuring effective Safeguarding practice for the organisation as stipulated in primary legislation and underpinned in Government strategy and national, regional and local guidance, procedures and standards.
Communication
• Facilitate safe and effective multi-professional communication and information sharing appropriately across a range of settings and agencies, including paediatric liaison.
• Ensure that the exchange and effective dissemination of confidential information is safely shared in accordance with legislation, guidance and local policy.
• To represent as necessary the service at relevant meetings, groups and committees
• Utilise and promote the use of IT systems – Electronic Patient Records/ Microsoft Word/ Microsoft Excel/ NHS mail etc. daily.
• Effectively manage patient information and analyse data from a clinical perspective.
Operational
• In conjunction with the Multidisciplinary Team, ensure that information provided to health professionals and patients/parents/carers are representative of research based recommendations.
• To develop appropriate information systems and ensure documentation systems are in place to assist in the delivery of a high standard of care.
• To support the delivery of the Safeguarding training programme to all staff across the Trust in partnership with the Named Nurses.
• Deliver informal and formal educational initiative for staff.
• Provide specialist professional safeguarding children advice and effective supervision for a range of professionals and staff across the Trust.
• To review all paediatric attendances to the Emergency Department, ensuring appropriate and timely action/referrals have taken place and escalating to the Named Nurse Safeguarding Children and the Emergency Department Matron/Lead Nurse if Trust process has not been adhered to.
• To ensure safeguarding information from the Emergency Department is disseminated to the appropriate community health professional.
· Take a proactive role to promote and embed effective safeguarding practice, systems and process within the Trust.
• To ensure all staff have access to appropriate support and supervision mechanisms, which will enhance learning.
• To support the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children to provide complex written communication in the form of action plans, reports, presentations, policies and procedures.
• To act as a specialist practitioner for Safeguarding Children and Paediatric Liaison Service, to discuss, advise and negotiate with the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children to inform service development.
• To undertake regular review and audits as required.
