An enthusiastic and able lawyer to join the in-house legal team at the Borough Council. Based within the Legal Safeguarding Team you will primarily work in the area of Adult Social care and/or Education.
You will be a key member of the team. The post involves provision of significant levels of support to the Legal Services Manager, solicitors and social work clients.
You will need excellent communication skills, team skills and the ability to interpret legislation in a common sense and practical manner, having due regard to the Council’s legal responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Carry out the duties with full regard to the Council’s Corporate Plan, the Corporate Equality and Diversity Policy, Health and Safety Policy and Social Inclusion Strategy.
Provide legal advice and guidance to Client Departments of the Council as and when required.
Represent the Legal Services Manager at both internal and external meetings as and when required.
Provide advice and guidance, where appropriate, under the supervision of the Legal Services Manager, Senior Solicitor and/or solicitors from the Specialist Team, on adult’s safeguarding, education and associated matters, including, education prosecutions, criminal injuries compensation and disclosure of information to third parties.
Attend court / tribunal with fee earners and/or counsel as required.
Be involved in the management of Council projects as part of the appropriate specialist team.
Be occasionally involved in the management of high profile and complex safeguarding matters under the supervision of the Legal Services Manager, Senior Solicitor and/or Solicitors from the Specialist Team,
Involved in the management of litigation and other proceedings involving the Council including preparation of court and tribunal documents, managing external lawyers including counsel, liaising with courts and tribunals, liaising with external parties in litigation including opposing legal advisers, experts and witnesses and working with internal clients involved in proceedings.
Manage external lawyers involved in proceedings or providing other advice, guidance and assistance and to liaise with other council officers and departments in the delivery of advice, proceedings, statutory and contract documentation, and the development of Council policies.
Undertake other legal work as appropriate including legal research drafting of legal documents.

Qualifications:
Must be undertaking or have undertaken relevant professional training for a recognised professional legal qualification or commensurate experience
Knowledge:
Knowledge of relevant legislation for the service area
In depth knowledge of the relevant legislation to the service area
Good knowledge of relevant legislation to the service area and the decision making processes and procedures
Understanding of current issues and best practice on service delivery relevant to the service areas
Experience:
Experience of working on own initiative and of dealing with sensitive/urgent matters
Significant experience of independent advocacy in courts and tribunals, including on more complex cases.
Proven track record of managing own clients and their cases
Skills & Abilities:
Good communication skills, both orally and in writing
Good analytical skills
Strong organisational and IT skills
Ability to work under pressure and respond efficiently to the changing needs of the clients.
Ability to contribute to the ongoing development of the Legal Service
Ability to be able to travel to attend courts wherever the client’s case is being considered.
Ability to be available to attend premises out of hours to attend evening meetings and in the event of emergencies or urgent management issues in relation to both authorities
