There is currently an opportunity to join the group in delivering our ambitions in the operational role of Chemical Management and Logistics Lead to develop, implement, and have oversight of the processes and procedures necessary for the provision of highly effective and efficient stores (inc. consumables, chemicals, and samples) and offer expert support to colleagues on logistics management (including movement of equipment globally) that underpins the excellent science we deliver to our customers.

Your main duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

The post holder will be responsible for the effective day-to-day operations of our chemical management (which includes management of samples, freezers, consumables, & chemicals) and ensuring the smooth running of our logistics requirements (which includes chemical transportation). In discharging these responsibilities, the successful candidate will ensure rigorous adherence to relevant H&S regulations, develop, and maintain safe systems of work, and be able to complete necessary paperwork to achieve and sustain compliance with associated standards. Post holder will be expected to deliver ongoing strategic improvement projects working with all stakeholders to raise awareness and skills to enable colleagues to deliver world class science.

It is therefore essential that the post holder has demonstrable skills, understanding and applied knowledge of these requirements. The role is required to develop and maintain a cross-site chemical waste storage facility and to ensure stock levels are maintained & monitored effectively and will manage our chemical stores facilities with full understanding of all necessary hazards and risks, implementing best practice storage management approaches.

As our lead Chemical Transport Advisor (CTA) the post holder will provide timely advice on, and ensure rigorous adherence to, relevant Risk Assessments and procedures. They will act as the primary contact for colleagues on stores and logistics matters and maintain appropriate sample reception facilities and implementation of end-to-end sample tracking processes, engaging other key stakeholders in the overarching process to ensure a consistent and sustainable approach is embedded (e.g. reception – storage – analysis – archive – disposal).

In managing our cold storage facilities (e.g. large fridges & walk-in freezers) they will be responsible for effective utilisation, access, and maintenance of the equipment. As CTA they will advise and arrange the transportation of chemicals by road, sea and air using ADR, IMDG and IATA systems. In managing wider logistics requirements, the post holder will understand the processes (freight, commodity codes, insurance, dangerous goods notifications etc.) associated with national and international shipping, and they will manage the relationship with our logistics and customs service’s supplier (K&N).

In addition, Cefas reserves the right to ask staff to take on additional duties and responsibilities which are commensurate with their grade. Team Leaders and management will have a discussion with staff to explain the changes that are to be made. A new job description will be issued if required.
