Summary


As an Expert by Experience (EbE) team member you will ensure the needs and views of people using services are heard and acted on, by working within the East of England Provider Collaborative (commissioned services, across a number of providers). You will work alongside the Collaborative/unitsfor inpatient mental health and learning disability settings.

An EbE's main role is to bring another viewpoint that comes from their own personal experience.

This experience may come from:

* direct admission to hospital as an inpatient

* direct experience of extra support in the community in order to avoid admission;



Your role will be to work alongside the case manager and clinical units to ensure that the person engages in their pathway, enabling their voice and opinions to be heard and acted upon.

Although there are clear parameters and expectations, there will also be opportunities to positively shape and influence the role and build and develop important relationships with stakeholders and partners.
The post holder will work to the People Participation Lead and Clinical personnel within the assigned Provider Collaborative to achieve the following core objectives:

Work with people using services from admission to the unit to discharge.

Help people understand the inpatient Mental Health system and processes – be a source for high quality information that is easy to understand.
To work proactively with the allocated inpatient units. Supporting communication processes between the people using services, enabling units to create a compassionate and responsive approach.

Empower people using services to access information and to be part of planning (with the person’s consent)

Have knowledge and networks of the local area to support people with information and signposting.

To be a point of liaison within the Unit, on matter’s relating to inpatient’s, specifically quality improvement initiatives to enable more robust and inclusive engagement/parental involvement.

Help people using services, raise concerns where necessary and take action to escalate those concerns if necessary.

Champion the role of “Experts by Experience” within units,

Supporting people to ensure their voice is heard and they are seen as equals in their own care pathway.

To work with colleagues across the regions to ensure the delivery of improvements through Experts by Experience roles of lived experience, engagement and involvement across all inpatient units and demonstrate the value of Experts by Experience roles.
Actively contribute to the evaluation of the Expert by Experience Programme

Support, where indicated using local escalation processes to raise with the Clinical staff of the Provider Collaborative or lead commissioner if local resolution is not possible.
Sharing concerns and/or escalating unresolved concerns to the People Participation Lead as required.
Maintain accurate records and comply with local procedures for record keeping, confidentiality and security.

Enabling patient and public involvement;

To act as a champion for patients and their interests and involve the public and patients in the policy development and decision-making of NHS England and NHS Improvement.
To ensure all public and patient contact with the office is of the highest professional standard.
To embed patient and public involvement within NHS England and NHS Improvement at all levels of decision making

Promoting equality and reducing inequalities;

To uphold organisational policies and principles on the promotion of equality.

To create an inclusive working environment where diversity is valued, everyone can contribute, and everyday action ensure we meet our duty to uphold and promote equality.

Highlight where there may be a need for reasonable adjustments

Promoting Rights and Signposting;

Sharing information to support understanding and preparing for Care Plan Approach (CPA) meetings, where appropriate

Understanding and preparing for Care Treatment Reviews (CTR), where appropriate
Individual’s rights including legal frameworks (MHA, MCA, Human Rights Act).
Understand the community teams and their roles (CAMHS, IASS, CCGs).
Be able to signpost to groups in their local area and on Social Media.
Be able to provide Information about key policies (eg. NICE and Transforming Care).
Have the knowledge to signpost when they may need legal advice and how to go about this.
