Summary

The University Medical Centre in Bath is seeking an enthusiastic Health Care Assistant to support the nursing team in the delivery of and clinical care in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

The role can be extended or adapted to fit your skill base if you hold additional qualifications and is centred around a mostly young University patient population. The team of nurses is small but well established and we would welcome a new member to support the needs of the patient population.

The position can be made available with immediate effect for a Health Care Assistant to join our friendly Practice team with flexible working patterns able to be considered and a competitive salary being offered for the role.

Working Days: Full-Time and Part-Time positions will be considered with days and hours to be agreed, working ideally a minimum of 3 days a week.

Main duties of the job
Support the clinical team and undertake core HCA activities to help provide appropriate care and treatment in line with Practice policy and protocols.

Perform phlebotomy and ECGs and facilitate routine blood pressure monitoring.

To carry out baseline patient observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, BMI checks, temperature and pulse rate, and record findings accurately in the clinical system.

Perform wound care management, apply patient dressings and other clinical tasks as requested by the nursing team including support with the management of chronic disease clinics.

Provide advice on healthy lifestyles, assist and support patients in changing behaviours and to deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate.

Act as a chaperone when requested.
Administer flu vaccinations when trained.
Undertake first aid and support in emergencies such as wound dressings for burns.
Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for transportation.
Provide support to GPs during minor surgery procedures.
Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session.
Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely and temperature recordings monitored.

Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the Infection Prevention and Control policy.

Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care.
Report changes in patient conditions to a Nurse or GP.
Participate in Practice audit and shared learning.

The University Medical Centre is an NHS GP Practice conveniently situated in Quarry House on North Road in Bath and we are located not far from the University of Bath campus.

The Practice provides a range of NHS services available for all registered patients living within the Practice area. The majority of our patients are part of the University community and we aim to ensure that the services available match the needs of all of our patients both now and in the future.

The post holder will undertake a range of HCA activities and provide appropriate care and treatment in conjunction with the GPs and registered nursing team in accordance with Practice policy and protocols.

The HCA will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures as well as promoting self-care in order that patients are empowered to manage their own healthcare needs. To support the clinical team and to act within professional boundaries striving to improve standards of care.

Essential criteria
Essential to have training in and experience of performing phlebotomy.

To have a healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or currently working towards obtaining the equivalent level.

To be willing to train to achieve the HCA Health Care Certificate if not already achieved. Experience of working autonomously and also as a member of the Team.

To understand the need for confidentiality and Safeguarding practices working within a Primary Care environment.

An ability to evaluate safety and to understand the effectiveness of own clinical practice.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology and procedures.
To have excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with good organisation and attention to detail.
Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure.
Commitment to ongoing professional development. To be punctual and committed to supporting the team effort.

Desirable criteria
Previous completion of the HCA Health Care Certificate Phlebotomy training / certification Flu Vaccination training / certification Proven experience as a Healthcare Assistant in a GP surgery or Primary Care setting.
Knowledge to TPP clinical system. To be competent in the use of Microsoft Office and Outlook.

Qualifications Essential criteria
Experience of working with the general public. Experience of working in a health care setting.

Desirable criteria
Qualified in Phlebotomy Qualified with Health Care Certificate to level 3 or 4
