Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic and high performing team at the heart of decision making in the biggest Whitehall Department, as a Deputy Private Secretary to the Permanent Secretary.

As Head of the Department and Accounting Officer, the Permanent Secretary is accountable to Parliament for overseeing 85,000 DWP colleagues and over 900 sites, a £250billion budget and the payment of benefits to over 23milion recipients. They are the most senior policy advisor to the Secretary of State.

Due to the nature of the role, it can only be performed from Caxton House, 6-12 Tothill St, London, SW1H 9NA.

We particularly welcome people from ethnic minority backgrounds applying as they are under-represented groups in DWP.

To understand more about DWP and Policy Group – and full information on applying for this vacancy - you must read the attached Candidate Pack.

The Deputy Private Secretary role sits in the Permanent Secretary’s Office and is responsible for supporting the Permanent Secretary on a significant portion of the department’s policy areas including Labour Markets, Universal Credit and Parliamentary Business.

The role is demanding, managing a heavy workload which is often compounded by reactive asks. The right candidate will have an ability to grasp complex policy issues at pace, be a keen problem solver who can maintain oversight of the bigger picture whilst stepping into enough detail to know when to engage the Permanent Secretary.

Relationship building is fundamental to being a brilliant private secretary and as such the roles require excellent interpersonal skills and collaborative working across Ministerial Private Offices, Directors General and their offices, senior civil servants and policy leads.
