Summary

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is the department for economic growth. We support businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country.

Critical minerals are a crucial input to a wide range of sectors across the UK economy including automotive, energy and healthcare, and to achieving our Net Zero commitments.

DBT’s Critical Minerals and Mining team is a growing team in DBT’s Business Group. It is responsible for delivering the UK’s Critical Minerals Strategy, which aims to support economic growth across the economy by accelerating the UK’s domestic capabilities in the production, processing and recycling of critical minerals, collaborating internationally to strengthen and diversify international supply chains, and enhancing international markets.

Internationally, the UK has agreements with eight other countries ranging from producer countries of critical minerals to other established centres of mining expertise.

We also work closely with partners in multilateral groups such as the Minerals Security Partnership and the G7 on shared policy and economic objectives. These relationships provide the foundation on which we are building our international strategy.

In your role as a senior policy adviser, you will work in a small but growing international team. Precise responsibilities are likely to evolve along with our approach and you will have a chance to shape this. However, the opportunities are broad and will involve building relationships with international partners and others across government working in this field, developing and delivering clear delivery focussed delivery plans for specific markets, and taking forward a number of higher ambition interventions in line with a new government’s priorities.

This is a fascinating area of work at the centre of the UK government’s strategies for growth, net zero, international trade policy and more. You will be joining a friendly team with regular team days in the office, a strong learning and development culture and support for you to develop your career.

DBT is a modern and diverse workplace, committed to promoting and ensuring equality and valuing diversity. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status. We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity. We ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process.

  • Contribute to the development of an ambitious international strategy, to ensure the UK has access to the critical minerals it needs to support future economic growth.
  • Identify opportunities for a wide range of tools, including UK trade policy, business support, and collaboration with industry and other stakeholders, to achieve the goals of our international strategy.
  • Develop and own key relationships with international partners and businesses to jointly deliver on shared objectives.
  • Manage a portfolio of DBT initiatives and/or action plans for specific partner markets/multilateral organisations to deliver our international objectives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across government (DBT, FCDO, DESNZ, UKEF and overseas posts) and industry to design and deliver our international engagement on critical minerals.
  • Advise senior officials and ministers, in writing and orally on our strategy and secure their support for delivery
