Summary

A Vacancy at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

This exciting and unique opportunity has arisen to join Guys and St Thomas’s Community Learning Disability Services in Lambeth and Lewisham for two 12 month projects, which focus on the development of Intensive Support Services in the respective boroughs, for people with behaviour that challenges. We are seeking two experienced clinicians one for the Lambeth project, which is newly funded and one clinician for the Lewisham post, where the project has been running for 12 months and the funding has been extended. These post offers excellent opportunities to work jointly with other Speech and Language which include the Southwark IST Speech and Language Therapist, where the team is firmly established. Applicants are only required to make one application, as they will be considered for both posts.

The post holder will be based with the Lambeth team for Adults with LearningDisabilities Service but will be clinically working within the Lambeth Intensive Support Team (IST). The post holder will hold a small complex caseload that is referred from within the IST or as part of follow up from previous IST caseloads.

The post holder will act as a full member of the IST multidisciplinary team and work in accordance with the 4 key principles as stated in the White Paper – Valuing People.

The IST team itself is hosted by the South London and Maudsley (SLaM) but is a joint team between GSTT, SLaM and Lambeth Local Authority.

The post holder will also be a member of a larger community Adults with Learning Disabilities (AWLD) Speech and Language Therapy team and the wider multidisciplinary AWLD team, which covers the boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust comprises five of the UK’s best known hospitals – Guy’s, St Thomas’, Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Royal Brompton and Harefield – as well as community services in Lambeth and Southwark, all with a long history of high quality care, clinical excellence, research and innovation.

We are among the UK’s busiest, most successful foundation trusts. We provide specialist care for patients including heart and lung, cancer and renal services as well as a full range of local hospital and community services for people in Lambeth and Southwark.

We have a long tradition of clinical and scientific achievement and – as part of King’s Health Partners – we are one of England’s eight academic health sciences centres, bringing together world-class clinical services, teaching and research. We have one of the National Institute for Health Research’s biomedical research centres, established with King’s College London in 2007, as well as dedicated clinical research facilities.

We have around 22,700 staff, making us one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country and one of the biggest employers locally. We aim to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and continue to develop new and existing partnerships with local people, patients, neighbouring NHS organisations, local authorities and charitable bodies and GPs.

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of a cohesive and effective speech and language therapy service, both communication and eating and drinking (dysphagia), to adults with learning disabilities who have been referred to the IST service.

The Lambeth Intensive Support Service team is a small multiagency service, working across 3 organisations, with different professions:

• Guy’s and St Thomas’ (GSTT)- Speech and Language Therapy

• South London and Maudsley (SLAM)- Psychology, Behaviour Support, Transforming Care nurse

• Lambeth Social Services- Advanced Social Work Practitioner

The Lambeth IST service provides intensive community support in Lambeth for adults living with learning disabilities and behaviours that significantly challenge, who are at risk of family / placement breakdown or hospital admission.

The Lambeth IST Speech and Language Therapist will work in close partnership with clients and families and their support network, carrying out specialist assessments to inform communication support strategies and bespoke training.

The Lambeth IST Speech and Language Therapist will also work on eating and drinking (dysphagia) assessment and support for people referred to the Lambeth team.

The post holder will work closely with the Speech and Language Therapy Assistants in the creation of specialist SLT communication supports.
