Summary
The NELFT AHP leadership team is delighted to announce a new 12 month fixed term post for an occupational therapy practice development practitioner.
The successful candidate will provide practice development support to designated cohorts of occupational therapists in NELFT and act as a member of the AHP leadership team three days per week and provide face to face teaching and learning support within the Allied Health Faculty and Occupational therapy teaching team at UEL.
The aim of the post is to enhance education and development for NELFT occupational therapists and expand clinical practice placements in NELFT through partnership working with UEL.
This role is a great opportunity for any occupational therapist who meets the person specification and wishes to expand their experience in the practice pillar of education. There may be an opportunity to obtain a formal teaching qualification should this be required or desired.
The post would suit an occupational therapist with post graduate practice-based experience in a range of clinical settings, and who has demonstrable experience in providing practice based education and development support to other clinical staff within these roles. Any additional teaching experience would be desirable but is not essential. The role is suitable for established band 7 occupational therapists or those seeking a development opportunity.
Key Responsibilities:
· To work across NELFT and UEL to grow practice education placements within NELFT for occupational therapy and other AHP students and apprentices.
· To be an provider of OT teaching and clinical education to designated cohorts of NELFT occupational therapists and UEL students and apprentices.
· To develop and facilitate a newly registered OT education and development programme on a rolling regular basis in NELFT.
· To provide an OT training and induction programme for internationally educated occupational therapists.
· To provide in-reach lecturing support to UEL occupational therapy and other Allied health professional programmes addressing areas of shared learning.
· To undertake learning needs analysis for designated cohorts of occupational therapists in NELFT and report and respond to these with the relevant leads within NELFT AHP , NELFT training and development and UEL.
· To promote excellent patient outcomes and experience, as well as retention of occupational therapists by developing and maintaining access to a comprehensive range of Occupational therapy post graduate learning and development both in-house and via UEL partnership.
To provide specialist advice, teaching and training to Occupational therapists in NELFT regarding the safe management of patients including in regards to adaptive equipment, assistive technologies and patient centred care.
Starting with NELFT
NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will includemandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focussing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.
Probationary Period
This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).
High Cost Area Supplement
This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,313 to a maximum of £5,436).

The post holder will provide direct practice education and training support to specified cohorts of NELFT occupational therapists (primarily newly registered domestically and internationally trained), as well as the opportunity to work as part of the clinical teaching team in the Allied Health Faculty at UEL. The post holder will provide direct teaching to AHP undergraduate students and apprentices and provide formal training and development opportunities to designated NELFT occupational therapists both at UEL or within NELFT. The post holder will work closely with UEL AHP programme leads and coaches and NELFT AHP Practice education facilitator to ensure growing capacity for practice education in NELFT in line with the needs of UEL AHP students and apprentices. This would include some liaison across the two organisations to support the growth of practice education placements for occupational therapy and other AHP students and apprentices in NELFT.
The post holder will work with designated cohorts of NELFT occupational therapists to support the practice education support for those joining the registered workforce at band 5 and 6 focussing on transition and acquisition of clinical skills specific to the clinical roles. The post holder will engage closely with occupational therapists, clinical service and professional leads to identify learning needs, plan, arrange and implement training required and continuously evaluate staff competence in the assigned areas of training, ensuring that development is aligned to and informs local and national priorities. The post holder will demonstrate a high level of knowledge and competency pertaining to occupational therapy clinical practice and will be well placed to provide direct guidance, advice and education to the registered occupational therapy workforce regarding best practice.
The practice development practitioner will drive high standards of occupational therapy practice to improve safe patient care, support education, training and development strategies for the designated cohorts of occupational therapists through the development and delivery either within NELFT or in partnership with UEL of relevant training and development forums including: a development group for newly registered OTs, OT clinical programme for internationally educated occupational therapists, offering bespoke guidance and support for individual OTs and their teams for those in these cohorts who may require tailored development support. They will also to be responsible for supporting changes in practice based on evidence, research, audit findings and best practice, which improve and impact positively on patient outcomes and key performance indicators.
