The School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science - Department of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics (PAM) is seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Data Science, to support our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in this area and to conduct independent research. PAM is a research-active department with strengths in Astrophysics, Climate Science, Mathematics and Theoretical Physics research, currently funded through grants from STFC, NERC, the Royal Society and the Leverhulme Trust among others. Our Data Science teaching and research programmes build on our Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics expertise, and we are particularly keen to receive applications from research-active staff whose research interests complement our existing programmes.


Main Duties and Responsibilities


You will undertake teaching and assessment at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Data Science. You will also support learning through design and development of course materials including online content and undertaking necessary tutorial and administrative activities.
You will be expected to contribute actively to the research interests of the School and/or to develop short courses, commercial and Knowledge Transfer Partnership related activities in the School. You will supervise postgraduate research projects and apply for external funding to support research and/or commercial activities.
For the role of Senior Lecturer, you will also undertake an administrative role in the School such as Module Leadership, assisting with programme management, or other similar duties, provide leadership in an aspect of research or commercial activities and undertake other duties within the framework of the post as delegated by the Head of Department, Programme Leader for Mathematics, or Head of the relevant research group.


Skills and Experience


You must have experience of working in Data Science, Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics or closely related areas within Higher Education or in a relevant sector, including demonstrable research activity. In addition to this you will need proven experience of teaching or tutoring at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. You must have a strong commitment to teaching, learning and student support at University level and a potential to attract external research and/or commercial funding. You will have demonstrable proficiency in English Language, with excellent oral and written communication skills. You must have a strong desire to enthuse and engage our students and be effective within a team setting. We will also expect from you a willingness to develop module and programme level material whilst also demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement and to undertake professional qualifications where appropriate. Willingness and ability to contribute to teaching in other areas of Physics, Astronomy or Mathematics is desirable

For the role of Senior Lecturer, you must have substantial experience of working in Data Science, Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics, or closely related areas. You will also be required to have a strong track record of research publications and/or industrial experience and evidence of securing external funding. In addition to this, you must have the knowledge and demonstrable experience to contribute to the School's teaching and research areas.

Qualifications Required


The role requires a doctorate in a relevant subject area, or equivalent qualification.
