Serco Maritime have a new and exciting opportunity for an Apprentice to join the team in Devonport completing a Level 2 Seafarer Deck Rating (Tug) apprenticeship.
Serco Maritime Services deliver maritime support packages tailored to our customers’ needs all delivered within a national accreditation framework. As owners and operators of specialist vessels, from harbour workboats to oceangoing support vessels, we provide world class integrated maritime services both in the UK and abroad. Our vessels provide a range of support, which include for example: dive support, military training, submarine rescue exercises, target/test equipment deployment/recovery and passenger transfers.
This is a unique apprenticeship where you will undertake the required training and sea service to obtain qualification and to assist vessel crew in deck operations. The apprenticeship will be divided between extended periods working on board Serco vessels and 3 phases at the National Maritime Training Centre, North Kent College, each lasting 4 weeks long spaced periodically throughout the duration of the apprenticeship. You learn the practical application of the knowledge, skills and behaviours gained during your college phases whilst working onboard our vessels. At the end of your apprenticeship there will be an end point assessment, where upon successful completion you will obtain a Seafarer Deck Rating Certificate.
Key Accountabilities:


- To work as a member of the deck department on-board assigned vessels
- To learn and perform watchkeeping duties during day or night shifts, both at sea. These duties will include keeping a lookout on a sea passage during daylight or darkness as required by the master
- To perform housekeeping duties which may include cleanliness of own accommodation, mess room, galley, toilets, stairways and other areas of the vessel
- To learn and perform routine maintenance of the vessel and its equipment
- To maintain own safety and security and that of the other persons, vessel and its equipment, and environment whilst employed on-board
- To learn and operate mooring winches, windlass, cranes, watertight doors, lifesaving and firefighting appliances or other equipment as required by the master
- To learn and perform all tasks as required in the Able Seafarer (Deck) Training record book
- To successfully complete all training as required by Able Seafarer Deck Apprentice Standard
- To obtain the required sea service in the time period allocated by the Maritime Training Officer
- To comply with the UK MCA’s Merchant Navy Code of Conduct at all times
- To undertake other duties commensurate with the level of the post as may be reasonably required from time to time.


What you’ll need to do the role:


- Eligible for UK passport
- Capable of obtaining an ENG1 Unrestricted Medical Certificate including eyesight examination. An offer of apprenticeship will be made subsequent to obtaining ENG1 certificate.
- Academic Qualifications – preferred A level Mathematics or equivalent T level will be accepted.
- Minimum 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including Mathematics, English and Physical Based Science or equivalent qualifications from Scotland or Northern Ireland.
