Summary

A formwork carpenter is responsible for constructing the molds and forms into which concrete is poured during the construction of various structures. This role requires precise measurements, the ability to interpret blueprints, and proficiency in using a variety of hand and power tools.

Key Responsibilities:

Reading and Interpreting Blueprints: Study architectural and structural blueprints to understand formwork requirements and specifications.

Constructing Formwork: Build and assemble wooden or metal forms according to specifications for concrete structures. This involves measuring, cutting, and shaping materials such as timber, plywood, steel, and aluminium.

Installing Formwork: Set up formwork to desired specifications, ensuring it is securely positioned and aligned correctly.

Bracing and Shoring: Install bracing, scaffolding, and other temporary structures to support the formwork and ensure safety and stability during concrete pouring.

Concrete Pouring Support: Assist with the pouring and spreading of concrete into the forms. This may involve vibrating concrete to eliminate air pockets and smoothing surfaces to achieve desired finishes.

Formwork Stripping: Dismantle and remove formwork after concrete has set, ensuring structures remain intact and undamaged.

Maintenance and Repair: Inspect, maintain, and repair formwork to ensure it remains in good condition for reuse. This includes cleaning, oiling, and storing formwork properly.

Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures to maintain a safe working environment. This includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safe practices when working at heights or with heavy machinery.

Collaboration: Work closely with other construction team members, including concrete finishers, crane operators, and supervisors, to coordinate tasks and ensure efficient project completion.

Skills and Qualifications:

Carpentry Skills: Proficient in carpentry techniques, including measuring, cutting, and assembling materials.

Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret technical drawings and blueprints accurately.

Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with different types of formwork materials and construction methods.

Attention to Detail: Precision in measuring and cutting materials to exact specifications.

Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy materials and work in physically demanding environments.

Teamwork: Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with diverse construction teams.

Safety Conscious: Commitment to following safety protocols and maintaining a safe work environment.

Requirements:

CSCS Skills Card in formworks
Previous experience as a formwork carpenter or carpenter’s assistant is beneficial
Good communication skills
Proficient in using power tools and hand tools
Capable of heavy lifting.
