Summary


The SEND Consultant (Behaviour Support Lead) will be working within the already established RISE service, part of Brighter Futures for Children’s SEND team and part of the wider Education team. This SEND Consultant will lead the expansion of the RISE Team, providing guidance to maintained primary schools in Reading, supporting them with behaviour that challenges.

The SEND Consultant (reporting to the Senior Educational Psychologist/RISE Service Lead) will manage the SEND Consultant (Curriculum) and Inclusion Officer. They will provide expert advice to schools, working at a school/group/individual level. The roles and responsibilities include:
• To lead on the implementation of high-quality inclusive and therapeutic service (that aligns with Reading’s agreed approaches such as TTS, SCERTS and the autism growth approach) within Reading’s maintained primary schools, so that children and young people presenting with behaviour that challenges can have their needs met in an effective, timely and sustainable manner.
• Manage all staff within the new BFfC BSS Team. To hold responsibility for the day-to-day supervision and management of the team, including recruitment, induction, training and personal development, absence and performance management, retention, grievance/discipline/capability, succession planning and work force planning. Support the development of systems that will aid a high-quality service delivery, whilst integrating with the services currently on offer.
• Attend a wide variety of multi-agency meetings, considering how the BSS could integrate/support other services/initiatives.
• Be confident in presenting the purpose, role and scope of BSS to a wide variety of stakeholders.
• Lead a team of professionals within BFfC to ensure integration, coordination and provision of advice, support and guidance relating to presenting behavioural needs.
• Work collaboratively with other professionals across BFfC and within Reading’s maintained primary schools.
• Co-ordination of signposting to, and delivery of, relevant outreach and support services as well as to examples of good practice in other schools locally.
• To provide robust and effective evidence-based advice, support and challenge to school staff in identifying and supporting children presenting with behavioural needs and to; improve outcomes and ensure the school’s understanding of any underlying SEND need, consider how this relates to the graduated support framework and the ordinarily available, drawing upon the guidance set out in Reading’s ‘Ordinarily Available Provision’ document.
• To identify, plan, develop, and deliver training and professional development opportunities to school settings to improve practice and support children who may be disadvantaged, specifically targeting those presenting with behaviour that challenges.
• Organising, advising, and chairing multi-professional meetings arranged to support the inclusion of a child with behaviour that challenges.
• Leading project work around a service wide policy to manage behaviour that challenges and minimise exclusions.
• Working with the RISE Data analyst and Community Engagement and Research Officer to contribute towards gathering data regarding evidence of effectiveness of interventions and approaches and amending the behaviour support offer in line with feedback.
• To take reasonable care of your own health and safety and co-operate with management, so far is necessary, to enable compliance with the company’s health and safety rules and legislative requirements.
• To undertake such personal training as may be deemed necessary to meet the duties and responsibilities of the post.
• Considering how support mechanisms already in place/new support mechanisms could be used to prevent/reduce school exclusions in primary schools.
• Accessing and engaging in professional supervision on a regular basis.
• Keeping coherent records, managing workload independently and completing all requirements relating to data collection and producing a summary report.
• Promoting equality as an integral part of the role, treating everyone with fairness and dignity.
