Our apprenticeships combine working in a great job, with training, development, and a competitive salary. You will be given dedicated time in your working week to focus on your studies. You will also have access to a network of colleagues from within the organisation and tutors to support your learning.
The Finance Assistant apprenticeship consists of an 24-month opportunity to learn and to provide support, building on your Maths, IT and communication skills, whilst working towards a level 2 Finance Assistant Accounting qualification. You will join Islington Council’s Finance Team, where you will support the delivery of a comprehensive and effective finance service to the wider Council. This will include tasks ranging from maintaining finance records, business partnering, audit reviews, banking processing, and treasury maintenance. You will gain an understanding of the work of the team and will work in a supported learning environment whilst working towards a nationally recognised Level 2 Accounts/Finance Assistant apprenticeship.
To apply for this apprenticeship, you must:

- Be aged 16 or above and
- Be an Islington resident or
- Islington care leaver or
- Islington school leaver in the last 12 months

You will also need to satisfy the following course entry requirements:

- Not already have a qualification at the similar level or above in this apprenticeship subject
- Not have extensive skills or experience in this apprenticeship subject
- Pass the course entry tests for example in Maths and English
- Provide evidence of GCSE or level 2 equivalent e.g functional skills Maths, English at grade 4-9/A*-C.

The Job - Working as a Apprentice Finance Assistant for the Council you will:

- Work under supervision to learn financial management and administration skills including budget setting and control, input to financial systems.
- Develop accounting and problem-solving skills to provide advice and support to customer’s issues and concerns.
- Work individually and as part of a team to respond to customer’s requests effectively and efficiently.
- Liaise with customers directly via the phone, in writing or in person.
- Learn key office and administration skills including record keeping, filing, photocopying, answering queries and where appropriate carry out tasks independently.
- Develop strong professional relationships with your own team and with others we work alongside and to whom we provide services.

Training and Development – As part of your role you will:

- Complete a Level 2 Accounts/Finance Assistant apprenticeship qualification.
- Participate in the Councils apprenticeship network and various development activities.
- Have access to a buddy/mentor.

After you have successfully completed your apprenticeship, you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained your Level 2 Accounts/Finance Assistant qualification. This will improve your chances of finding work within the Council, with other employers or help you move on to a higher-level apprenticeship.
