Summary

Established in 1985 (Ltd in 1996) We are a small family-owned business manufacturing hand tools for specialist trades, and for engineering distributors across the UK and abroad, including the MOD supply chain. We are the leading manufacturer in the UK of stone masonry tools, and produce many other tools under white label for other well known brands.

Position Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and adaptable assistant production manager to take on the efficient and smooth operation of manufacturing & production, in a small team using a variety of traditional and modern processes, and to manage the day-to-day operations and requirements of this small business.
You will be responsible for managing a small team of production staff in every aspect of production, but also the supporting administration required, from orders being received, processed onto our systems, planning through manufacture, to them being dispatched and invoiced. You will learn our methods and then look to improve via new methods, efficiency, and alternative solutions.
As a small business, we will require you to wear many hats, including sales functions, health and safety duties, HR (Payroll), and various other general duties to make the wheels go round, whilst being supported by the managing director and the production team. If you do not already have these skills or experience, we will provide on-site training.
Our focus initially is on your organisation, experience in manufacturing/engineering, and managing production with a small team of staff to facilitate a smooth operation. We can teach you the use of our software, and the number of other supplementary skills required, which are mostly administrational tasks to support the overall flow of production and daily requirements of the business.
There is scope for career progression to production/general manager and further, which can be discussed at interview.

Key Responsibilities
Process works orders so that stock product orders can be processed without delay, and non-stock orders can be planned into production, including material purchasing, external processing etc.
Provide quotes for non-standard orders including accurate lead times and pricing.
Monitor the production team to ensure timely production, and maintain quality at all times.
Process orders to completion, despatch, and invoice.
Identify opportunities of improvement, both efficiency and quality, and cost justify plans to implement new processes.

Team Leadership
Monitor and cultivate a good working relationship with all staff members, working collaboratively to help improve their working experience and the aims of the business.
Provide training where applicable, and keep all staff updated with H&S standards, health monitoring etc.
Effectively communicate goals to staff members, including expectations and performance requirements. Encourage communication to be a two-way process.

Inventory Management
Manage inventory levels and implement the use of software packages provided to support production management processes.
Monitor levels of our own stock products which need planning into production, sometimes requiring purchasing months ahead.
Communicate with suppliers to maintain good working relationship, monitoring supply prices, and ordering in good time to reduce delays, whilst minimizing excess stock held and keeping shipping costs to a minimum.

Quality Control
Establish Quality control procedures, working with staff and the managing director to improve standards and reduce waste.
Regularly review quality standards to actively prevent issues.

Health and Safety
Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and standards to maintain a safe working environment for all. Assess any changes and update risk assessments regularly.

Business Development
Communicate frequently with the managing director about any issues which you feel could benefit the business and the staff.

Simplify manufacturing processes to remove the reliance of engineering skills that are currently provided by the managing director.
