Summary

A fixed-term vacancy has arisen for a Senior Research Technician to enable delivery of excellent research by the Centre of Metabolism, Ageing & Physiology (COMAP) in the University of Nottingham, School of Medicine’s Academic Unit of Injury, Recovery & Inflammation Sciences (IRIS). Funded by a Medical Research Council grant looking at exercise prehabilitation in colorectal cancer patients, the focus of this role will be techniques related to human metabolism including state-of-the-art mass-spectrometry and standard molecular biology approaches (e.g., Western blotting and RT-PCR).

Working primarily in the COMAP stable isotope mass-spectrometry facility (SIMS), you will use multiple mass-spectrometers of differing configurations and will be responsible for ensuring that the needs of a range of stakeholders (internal and external) are met.

You will work alongside a team of clinical and non-clinical academics and technical staff to deliver an efficient and effective technical service in COMAP. You will be required to work independently, be pro-active, show initiative to manage processes and projects, along with reacting to changing priorities and work circumstances. You will be expected to liaise with senior staff and external companies and provide mass-spectrometry related training/development for technicians, postgraduate research students, fellows and visiting academics.

You may also be required to provide support to metabolic studies in human volunteers and patients, especially in relation to the stable isotope approaches and associated biological sample collection employed in these studies.

Other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade, spirit and purpose of the post may be requested including contributing to research outputs and financial management. This role will be based in Derby at the University of Nottingham Medical School at Derby, although occasional travel to the universities other UK campuses may be required.
