We are looking to appoint a Community Consultant Paediatrician.

This is an opportunity to join the enthusiastic and friendly paediatric department in Wigan. There are close links between the community and acute paediatric services with some colleagues doing hybrid roles across both services. The post is advertised as standard 10 PA generic post. There are no acute paediatric or on-call commitments with these posts.

WWL Foundation Trust caters for a population of 310,000. There is an Integrated Children’s Service with combined Hospital and Community services within our Child Health Directorate.

The locality community paediatric workload will involve the assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental difficulties. Experience in the management of ADHD, ASD,ASD panels , Learning difficulties and associated comorbidities is necessary. There are close working relationships with colleagues in community services, North West Boroughs NHS Healthcare Foundation Trust, education and social care. Safeguarding on calls are currently being done by acute paediatric consultants and community paediatric consultants if they are interested to have it in their role .

The appointee will see patients in a variety of outpatients settings e.g. on the Thomas Linacre, Leigh Infirmary, Platt Bridge, Ashton community sites, Claire House and special schools ( Hope School, Rowan Tree Primary School, Willow Grove Primary School ). There are visiting clinics in cardiology, rheumatology, neurology, nephrology and urology by specialists from the tertiary children’s hospitals in the region.

Paediatric surgical facilities are on the RAEI site as is the A&E Department for the Wigan and Leigh district. This has been redeveloped and includes a self-contained Paediatric Emergency care centre. All acute children’s admissions are seen here. There is an assessment area with 8 cubicles.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the provider of acute hospital and community services to the people of the Wigan Borough and surrounding area. The Child Health Directorate sits within the Surgical Division of the Wrightington Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. The directorate covers all areas of Paediatric and Child Health services in both Acute and Community settings. Close relationships at management level are in place between the Acute, Community and Mental Health providers to promote integrated child health services across both hospital and community sectors.

You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a license to practice and be on the Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of attaining your CCT or equivalent at the interview stage.

An Enhanced DBS with Children barred list will be undertaken for the successful candidate.
