Summary

To understand and perform your work in accordance with the standard operational policies using basic theoretical knowledge Receive, sort and number all incoming samples and request forms. Enter details from each specimen and request form into laboratory information systems. Check and verify patient demographics. Pre-analytical preparation of specimens. This includes sorting, labelling, centrifugation, separating of and aliquoting of serum, and loading racks of specimens onto automated track systems in line with laboratory protocols. Maintain a clean and tidy work station, fridges, freezers, and store rooms / areas. Deal with minor spillages of specimens in line with laboratory policies. Record fridge/freezer temperature and the ambient temperature daily. Defrost fridges and freezers as required. Participate in the on call rota to monitor and act, where necessary, to ensure the fridges, freezers and lab kits stored in the CRF are kept at the the appropriate temperatures. Work shift patterns within the CRF on a rotational basis to cover the core hours of operation within the CRF and work weekend shifts where appropriate. Be responsible for service maintenance of the laboratory equipment. Ensure safe collection and disposal of waste within allocated working area. Attend to visitors to the department in a professional manner, such as patients, staff, couriers and other visitors. Deal with telephone calls and queries as directed. Sort, log and despatch samples as directed by the study protocol. To correctly store, retrieve and dispose of clinical specimens in accordance with departmental and Trust policies and HTA legislation. Replace stocks of consumables and reagents when required and inform the CRF Lead nurse and study co-ordinators if back up stocks are low. Receive and distribute supplies and goods. Organise for the collection and transport of samples as per protocol (courier, dry ice/ambient).
