Have you got experience of developing technology and/or delivering science programmes and innovation?
Are you an effective problem solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment?
Can you engage and liaise with a wide range of senior stakeholders?
If so, we’d love to hear from you!
We have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Innovation candidate to join the Science, Innovation and Technology (SciTech) directorate within the Department for Transport.
This role sits in the fast-paced directorate of Science, Innovation and Technology (ScITech), led by the Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) and a key part of the new decarbonisation, technology, and strategy group. We are a small team but have grown rapidly, reflecting the importance the department places in having science, engineering and technology at the heart of our biggest challenges.
Transport touches all our lives, every day. From the global shipping and aviation routes that deliver our food, fuel and medicine and link us physically to the rest of the world, to the roads and railways that are the arteries of our country. The role of the Department for Transport is to ensure that we can all access safe, secure, and reliable services and infrastructure across the UK. An essential component for transport networks of the future is our use of technology and understanding how we can best embed the very latest advances to improve transport for everyone.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead a small team including one SEO and up to two science and engineering fast streamers.
- Oversee the management of the CPC and TRL Limited Grant Agreements, including evaluation of the projects delivered to date – and implement new ways of working.
- Oversee the delivery of the annual TRIG proof-of-concept innovation scheme and drive its continuous improvement.
- Provide reactive advice to teams across the Department on innovation.
- Champion innovation within the DfT and wider community. Develop and maintain a network of key innovation stakeholders within government and wider industry.
- Lead the Transport Research and Innovation Board, Innovation Community of Practice.
