This exciting opportunity could be offered as a secondment and provides an excellent development opportunity for the right candidate(s). The majority of the workload will be as a Clinical Band 8 genetic counsellor, working within the UHBW Band 8 Genetic Counsellor Leadership team to provide expert genetic counselling and undertaking managerial and service development tasks, however the successful candidate(s) will also be delivering the role of the Generation Study Regional Results Co-ordinator in the Bristol region as outlined in the job description. The role will suit individuals who enjoy working in a varied and demanding role. In recognition of the potentially conflicting demands on the post holders time a bespoke job plan will be developed.
The Clinical Genetics Service is based at St Michaels Hospital and Abbot’s House within the UHBW site in central Bristol, and provides for a total population of 2.46 million in Gloucestershire, Bristol, Bath, Somerset & West Wiltshire. In addition to the service based in Bristol, there are peripheral units in Gloucester, Taunton and Bath, with Genetic Counsellors based at each unit.
The role will include line management of pre-registration and registered genetic counsellors and clinical support staff such as Genomic Associates. Additionally the post holder will apply advanced genetic counselling skills to undertake professional duties consistent with those of a registered genetic counsellor.
The post holder will provide genetic counselling for a broad range of hereditary conditions to a wide variety of patients which can include cancer, cardiac, prenatal, fetal medicine, paediatrics, adolescents, and adult referrals. The Regional Results Coordinator element of the role is a newly established role which ensures that babies and their families who receive a ‘suspected condition’ result from the Generation Study have a smooth handover to the NHS for confirmatory testing and, if required, to the relevant care and support pathway. The role is critical to ensure that babies are diagnosed and treated quickly by an appropriate treating clinician, which has a direct impact on these babies’ clinical outcomes and in some cases survival.
Flexible working hours are required to accommodate occasional out-of-hours appointments. In addition the post holder will act as an expert source of support for healthcare professionals working outside clinical genetics as they undertake genetic testing within their areas of specialism, in line with the agenda for mainstreaming genomic medicine.
We welcome applications from individuals who are keen to join our team of highly skilled, enthusiastic and motivated genetic counsellors. We are looking for candidates who can bring leadership skills and are keen to be part of exciting developments for our service as we strive to meet the demands of the genomic era of medicine.
