Hours: Full-Time / Hybrid
Location: Culham, Abingdon, OX14 3DB

Fusion, the process that powers the Sun and Stars, is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner, carbon-free energy that our world badly needs.

Our client leads the way in realizing fusion energy, partnering with industry and research for ground breaking advancements. Their goal is to bring fusion electricity to the grid, supported by tomorrow's power stations. In pursuit of our mission, they embrace core values: Innovative, Committed, Trusted, and Collaborative."

Benefits:

Outstanding defined benefit pension scheme,
Corporate bonus scheme of up to 7% and a Relocation allowance (if eligible).
Flexible working options including family-friendly policies.
Employee Assistance Programme and trained Mental Health First Aiders,
Emergency paid leave, Generous annual leave allowance (30.5 days) increased with length of service,
Wide range of career development opportunities
A vibrant culture committed to being fully inclusive.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), inc The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.

The role focuses on developing and implementing High-Performance Computing (HPC) models for microstructurally and chemically complex materials. This includes impurities, phase inclusions, strengthening oxide particles, solute alloying elements, and structural defects such as vacancies, dislocations, and grain boundaries. The position involves formulating numerical algorithms based on physical laws of interatomic interactions to investigate the evolution of these materials in extreme environments, simulating high temperatures, internal and applied stresses, gravitational and magnetic loads, and irradiation effects similar to those expected in a fusion power plant.

Additional Responsibilities:

Lead our client's research in microstructurally and chemically complex materials simulations, emphasising the application of mesoscale models to predict engineering-relevant quantities, internal strain, and stress fields for material lifetime assessment.
Explore applications of density functional theory, atomistic, and force field models to predict the evolution of microstructurally and chemically complex materials under expected fusion conditions, encompassing high temperatures, high stresses, and neutron irradiation. Non-fusion applications will also play a significant role in the research agenda.
Participate in, facilitate, and potentially lead international projects, fostering collaboration among scientists from three or more countries.
Develop new collaborations in cross-cutting areas of materials and engineering simulations using advanced computing, both within and beyond fusion, to uphold our client’s research at an internationally leading level.
Produce consistently high-impact output, including regular oral or invited conference presentations, a high quantity and quality of publications, and generally one or two first-author journal papers per year.
Applying advanced computational engineering methods to assess the performance of tokamak reactor components under expected fusion operating scenarios.
The job holder will contribute primarily to the EPSRC/EUROfusion research program, collaborating closely with other programs within the company.

Qualifications

Essential

PhD degree in a relevant field
Established expert in at least one aspect of atomistic simulations involving High-Performance Computing, preferably in fusion or other nuclear materials research.
Track record of first-author journal publications in career.

Desirable:

Long-term vision for fusion research needs in engineering materials science.
Fellowship or membership status, e.g. of IoP
Lecturing experience
Ability to communicate and influence other stakeholders effectively, especially post-holder’s equivalents in universities, international laboratories, etc.
Interest and ability to supervise members of staff involved in related projects.
