At the Border Control Post in Sevington, your time will be spent carrying out checks on live animals imported into GB from the European Union and Third Countries.

Sevington will be the largest Border Control Post in the country due to the level of expected traffic and no two days will be the same.

The timeline for the opening of Sevington Live Animal BCP is subject to change, but we are continuing with the recruitment process to allow for training at other BCPs in the Southern area. This training is likely to be at the BCPs located at London's 3 main airports, so overnight stays will be required for the training period.

APHA has a wide variety of field work, which we may require you to complete prior to commencing work at the BCP. This would be subject to the appropriate training in the specific work which could include Animal by-products (ABP) and International Catering Waste (ICW) visits.

Additionally, you may be required to support in notifiable disease outbreak tasks, as well as other work areas dependant on previous experience. Engagement in these additional work areas would supplement the Border Control work and assist in any future career progression you wished to pursue. It also acknowledges the varying level of experience and skills successful candidates will hold on joining the agency.

Training material is designed to ensure all new entrants, to APHA, build suitable confidence and competencies to deliver the work of APHA.

Your role as a Border Control Post vet involves a wide range of work including, but not limited to, the following:

• Completion of veterinary checks on imported animals, which comprise:

o Documentary
o Identity
o Physical and Welfare checks, dependent on species, origin, and size of consignments

• Liaison with BCP Operators, Importers, Agents, Local Authorities, Policy Teams and others involved in the international trade of live animals
• Assessment of a wide variety of species and types of consignments
• Consideration of the legal implications of consignments which are not compliant

In addition, you may be expected to become involved in:

• Incident and disease outbreak response
• investigating diseases in animals
• undertaking on-site investigations
• examining and inspecting animals to support differential diagnosis of disease
• collecting and submitting appropriate samples for laboratory testing
• collecting, interpreting relevant data and associated administrative documentation
• reporting findings and recommendations
• maintaining competence in this role
• Welfare Investigation - Statutory surveillance and intervention in animal welfare
• Inspection, Approval and Audit of premises and transport
• Compliance and Enforcement
• Local Stakeholder Engagement

Due to the nature of this role there will be regular outdoor working.

Duty and out of hours rotas

When you commence work at the Border Control Post, the working pattern will be shift work, with a 4 day on, 4 day off pattern, which creates a positive work life balance. The current expected opening hours of Sevington BCP are 8am to 6pm 7 days a week, this is subject to review due to business requirements.

A shift disturbance allowance of 12.5% is paid on top of the salary.
