About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity to appoint an Attendance Mentor with experience of managing student attendance and challenging behaviour, ideally in a secondary school environment. You will work as part of a close knit team which includes the School Attendance Officers, Assistant Heads of Year, Educational Welfare Officer, Safeguarding Team, Deputy Head Teacher and key agencies working in the best interests of our students. You will promote whole school attendance strategies and work with pupils and families to improve attendance.
The successful candidate will have experience working with challenging students and a strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. You should have the ability to use positive approaches to empower and enable students, and parents/carers, to improve their attendance. You should be able to build positive relationships with pupils, parents/carers and other professionals, managing your own caseload.
Personal Qualities
This role would suit someone who;
• Has proven skills and experience of working with challenging students to overcome adversity
• Has working knowledge of working with students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and understand the challenges to accessing education and maintaining satisfactory attendance.
• A working knowledge of safeguarding (KCSIE).
• Has excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Is able to demonstrate sensitivity, diplomacy and resilience when required
• Possesses counselling skills including active listening and a non-judgemental approach.
• Ability to use positive approaches to help empower our students and their families.
• GCSE grade C/4 or equivalent in English Language and Maths is essential.
• Has knowledge of the legal framework underpinning attendance management.
Desirable but not essential skills include:
• Experience of working in a similar role in a secondary school environment.
