An exciting development opportunity has arisen within the York Ophthalmology Department as we are seeking an experienced leader to take on the permanent role of Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

The post-holder will join a positive and focussed nursing leadership team, striving to provide the best standard of care for patients by supporting the nursing team into the future. The role will involve managing improvement projects; acting on patient feedback; roster and sickness management; developing nurse-led services and expanding nurse development within ophthalmology.

The successful candidate must have at least 18 months post registration experience at Band 6 level or equivalent, with some level of insight into the needs of an ophthalmology service.

Ophthalmology is one of the busiest and most clinically diverse specialities in the NHS, and as such provides one of the most interesting and engaging areas to learn, teach and develop. The senior sister / charge nurse will work with the Nursing & AHP Lead, consultants, ops managers, finance, HR and other key players to drive improvement and maintain safety within the department. As the Band 7 Senior Sister /Charge Nurse you will:
• Have 24 hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the department/team, providing management and professional leadership for the nursing team.
• Have the responsibility for ensuring the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care are maintained to a high standard.
• Hold the management responsibility for the administrative and financial aspects of the department.
• Ensure safe and consistent high quality service provision.
• Work with the wider medical and allied health professional team, involving all stakeholders in decision making
• Work with external departments such as day case units and theatre teams.
• Manage sickness and leave and ensure both are monitored appropriately
• Manage recruitment and retention of staff.
• Manage the e roster and staff allocations.
• Developing nurse led services and protocols
• Support the deputy sister/charge nurse teams and work to build a sustainable and effective junior leadership team
