Summary
The proposed programme will be a collaboration with the University of Manchester in the field of Data Sciences and Artificial Intelligence. This will be a supervised work theme exploring the use and analysis of big healthcare data for clinical decision making in emergency General Surgery as well as exploring the acceptability to patients of using healthcare data for research in Artificial Intelligence. The successful applicant will work closely with the General Surgery, Colorectal and HPB surgical teams at Manchester Royal Infirmary as well as the Clinical Data Sciences Unit at MFT. The candidate will be expected to register for a higher degree with the University of Manchester which will be co-supervised by Mr Anthony Chan (Consultant General Surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary) and Professor Yeng Ang (Professor of Gastroenterology at the Northern Care Alliance).
The post would be ideally suitable for a higher surgical (ST3+) trainee in General Surgery with a subspecialty clinical and research interest in General Surgery and would like the opportunity to study towards a higher research degree whilst gaining on-call operative experience. The successful applicant will take part in the General Surgery Middle Grade on-call rota which is 1:15 resident. Elective time will include 1 supervised General Surgery outpatient clinic per week, with the remaining time free of clinical commitment and dedicated to the agreed programme of research activity.
The successful applicant will undertake a leading role in a major research project in Data Sciences and Artificial Intelligence as directed by Mr Anthony Chan and Professor Yeng Ang in conjunction with appropriate colleagues.
The key duties and responsibilities of the post holder include:
·Developing the study protocol design in accordance with the aims of the project
·To recruit and consent patients into the study (if appropriate) as set out by the study protocol
·To carry out experimental computer laboratory work, and to maintain accurate and complete records of all findings
·Data analysis
·Presenting findings to colleagues and at national conferences
·Reporting in peer-reviewed journals
·To carry out work to further the project aims
·To carry out teaching duties and to potentially collaborate in other departmental research projects
·To actively engage with all research governance processes as set by the MFT Research & Innovation Department
·Maintain an up-to-date Good Clinical Practice (GCP) in Research for the duration of the post
The successful applicant will also be expected to register for the degree of MD/PhD at the University of Manchester (assuming responsibility for all required tuition fees) and engage with all the requirements as set out by the University to successfully complete the degree course.

The successful applicant will also provide a clinical service on the on-call rota at Manchester Royal Infirmary in General Surgery (covering Colorectal and HPB subspecialties) at a senior level (ST3+), working closely with the Specialty Registrars (ST3+), Core Surgical Trainees and Junior Clinical Fellows and Foundation doctors under the supervision of the Consultant team. The post holder will be accountable to the Lead Clinician.
