Summary


We are please to advertise a full time Band 6 Orthoptic post for 18 months, to cover secondment. You are invited to join a team of enthusiastic and motivated Orthoptists, Optometrists, Perimetrists, Ophthalmic technicians and Ophthalmologists at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ hospital trust. We would expect the applicant to do a wide range of adult and paediatric complex clinics. They may also have an interest in an extended role such as MR injection, SEN clinics etc.

We are seeking an Orthoptist who wishes to do a wide range of Orthoptic skills, complex children’s clinic, adult neurology clinics including casualty cover, primary and secondary vision screening. The department sees a wide range of Orthoptic patients and has various specialist clinics; Neuro-ophthalmology, medical eye unit, myasthenia gravis, max fax, A&E, paediatric neurology, endocrine including thyroid, genetic, renal, special care baby unit, Botulium toxin, adjustable sutures etc. We have an active role in teaching undergraduate Orthoptists, postgraduate Ophthalmologists, optometrists, medical students, school nurses’ health visitors, GPs, foster carers and other related professions. We regularly participate in CPD Audit and research.

We would welcome someone with experience of MR injecting

Guy's and St Thomas' is a Major London Hospital and tertiary referral center. It has a busy Ophthalmic department for both paediatrics and adults.

• To provide appropriate Orthoptic assessment for all patients referred to the department as in patients or outpatients.
• To conclude a diagnosis for Orthoptic Patients.
• To formulate programmes of treatment for Orthoptic patients.
• On return appointments to reassess patients and re-evaluate treatment plans.
• To assess, diagnose and treat patients with special needs in specialist children’s clinics i.e. patients from specialist clinics including Neurology, paediatric neurology (including Benign
Intracranial hypertension, Neurofibromatosis Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy Clinics), Endocrinology, Genetics, Paediatrics, Renal, and Special Care Baby Unit.
• To assess patients preoperatively
• To assess patients postoperatively and carry out appropriate treatment
• To instruct patients or parents/guardians of patients on a continuous course of treatment.
• To Liaise with Low Vision community workers and health professions regarding the educational and social needs of patients.
• To support paediatric Ophthalmologist in specialist paediatric outreach clinics
• To assist with clinical admin.
• To assess patients for adjustable sutures post operatively
• Liaise with Head or Dept Orthoptist regarding any problems regarding service delivery.
• To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Ophthalmologists, Orthoptists, Nurses, Clerks etc
• To perform appropriate perimetry automated and manual fields.
• To interpret the results from the Humphrey Visual field analyser and Goldmann Perimeter.
• To attend departmental meetings for the Ophthalmology and Orthoptic department
• Attend appropriate training events, courses and lectures thereby maintaining up-to-date knowledge and clinical skills.
• To attend and contribute to departments journal clubs.
• To comply with departmental quality procedures, participating in quality management monitoring. This will include audits for hospital ophthalmology services.
• To observe and maintain professional standards at all times.
• To be involved with departmental teaching
• To be involved in clinical placements of work experience students, Orthoptic Students,Optometry Students, Medical Students, GPs, Health Visitors, CMOs and Ophthalmologists etc.
• To attend an appraisal or IPR at least annually
• Assist and provide internal cover for colleagues during periods of annual leave, sickness andvacancies cross-site.
• To take part in extended role activities e.g. Glaucoma injecting

Communications
• To keep and maintain appropriate records at all times ensuring that all paperwork is filed promptly into case-notes.
• Respect patient and staff confidentiality at all times.
• Liaise with other Departments within the hospital (for example, the wards, other specialities, the waiting list office, medical records, outpatients and information systems) and ensure that
the Department interfaces efficiently with them.

This is an excited opportunity for an Orthoptist to join a multidisciplinary team at a major London teaching hospital and tertiary referral system.
