Summary


This is an exciting opportunity for a doctor with experience in paediatrics to join a dynamic department. Although these roles are new within the Paediatric department, the Trust is supportive in allowing candidates to achieve their CESR programme in other specialties. The Paediatric department will support successful candidates to obtain relevant competencies.



The post holder will work on the middle grade tier; however, it is envisaged that a full tier two rota will not be worked and a bespoke rota will be created. The post holder will be required to cover on-call duties including some night shifts and weekends (with consultant support). Duties will be undertaken on the Paediatric ward, Outpatient clinic, Special Care Baby Unit and Children’s Assessment Unit.

The Specialty Doctor role presents an excellent service and personal development opportunity for the successful candidate to take an active senior role in a number of significant future developments within the paediatric department. These include:
1. Development of an ambulatory service
2. Simulation
3. Teaching of medical students
4. Subspecialty interest e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, cardiology etc

We have a 14 bedded Paediatric ward, with one dedicated HDU bed where we can provide high flow oxygen therapy. We have a Children’s Assessment Unit which is based on the Paediatric ward and is currently open 12noon-8pm during weekdays, with referrals being seen on the ward during other times. We have an active Paediatric outpatient department with general, specialist and community clinics being run by our existing consultants. We have visiting tertiary consultants from Leeds General Infirmary in Endocrinology and Cardiology as well as having a close working relationship with tertiary centres including Hull Neonatal Unit and Leeds Children’s Hospital.

We have an eight bedded level one neonatal unit. These are special care cots and we stabilise babies prior to retrieval where needed. We have the ability to provide CPAP to babies for a limited period of time.

We have a three bedded Paediatric Emergency Department, which is staffed largely by Paediatric Nurses.

The Paediatric Department is currently supported by 10 Consultants (7 substantive), 1x associate specialist, 1 x ST4 trainee, 1x ST3 trainee, 1x Trust Grade Registrar, two registrar long term locum doctors, 3 x GP trainees, 2 x FY2 trainees and 3 x FY1 trainees. We have also recruited an advanced care practitioner who will sit on the Tier 1 rota. We have eight Hull York fourth year medical students for eight weeks at a time in the department from August to May and we contribute to their education.
