Summary

Senior Specialist Speech & Language Therapist – Critical Care and Acute Medicine Band 7

Due to an internal promotion within our team, we are creating a brand-new exciting post in the acute Speech and Language Therapy team at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join our existing inpatient team of 26.2 WTE SLTs and 1.4 WTE SLT assistants in a split role based at St Thomas’ Hospital. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality care to adult inpatients with communication and/or swallowing disorders in critical care (0.6WTE) and on the fast-paced Acute Admissions Ward - AAW (0.4 WTE).

In critical care you will be joining an experienced team of SLTs working within a world-renowned clinical setting. The critical care directorate comprises six clinical areas and totals 75 beds on the St Thomas’ site and 13 on the Guy’s critical care unit. As well as serving the local population we provide tertiary critical care to the region. Our case mix is challenging with a large proportion of complex medical and cardiothoracic patients. We manage a wide spectrum of medical and surgical emergencies. We are one of the largest severe respiratory failure centres in Europe and this includes a consultant-led ECMO/severe respiratory failure retrieval service.

On AAW, you will work in partnership with a band 7 SLT colleague along with the motivated and proactive MDT to enhance patient care and experience as well as facilitating efficient and safe discharge from hospital or transfer to other specialisms. The 60 bed fast track medical admissions ward thrives on teamwork and positivity and is dedicated to delivering excellent care for acutely unwell adults from all ages and backgrounds and with a wide range of illnesses.

There is a strong ethos of clinical support, supervision and development within the team. The service is able to offer you excellent supervision and peer support, with an emphasis on team working. Quality improvement projects and research ideas are strongly encouraged, both within SLT and in the multi-professional teams. We have regular team meetings, plus opportunities for continuing professional development through in-house training, clinical excellence networks and external courses.

The suitable applicant will have experience of working at a post-graduate level, independently managing adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders, and patients who have tracheostomies and may also be ventilator dependent. Experience of instrumental assessment is essential and leadership/supervision experience is desirable.

You will provide clinical supervision and support for junior members of staff, ensuring delivery of an evidence based and equitable service. Teaching is a significant part of the role and you will participate in nurse/medical education in both clinical areas.
