Degree Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering or Quantity Surveying

The Role

Aimed at A-level and college students, the Jones Bros Civil higher apprenticeship programme gives young people an opportunity to
earn money while gaining firsthand and practical civil engineering or quantity surveying experience and academic qualifications.
We are offering opportunities to become either a project Civil Engineer or Quantity Surveyor.

Civil Engineering

As an apprentice Jones Bros civil engineer, you will work on civil engineering projects across the UK as part of our project
management and delivery teams. You will gain hands-on experience with setting out, GPS technology, cost control, problem-solving,
material testing, and quality control, while also actively engaging in procurement processes and addressing health, safety, and
environmental concerns. Guided by seasoned engineers, you'll acquire practical skills, participate in training sessions, and
pursue professional qualifications.

Quantity Surveyor

As an apprentice quantity surveyor at Jones Bros, you will assist with cost estimation and planning, measurement and valuation,
tender preparation and analysis, and contract administration. You will help monitor project costs, conduct site visits, support
procurement, ensure compliance with regulations, and maintain documentation. Working closely with project management teams,
engineers, and commercial teams, you will ensure seamless project execution. Under the guidance of experienced surveyors, you will
contribute to cost control, risk management, and the overall financial efficiency of projects while attending training sessions
and progressing towards professional qualifications.

Participants will attend blocks of college each year at Coleg Cambria, Bersham Road in Wrexham to receive training and advance
towards their qualification. On-the-job training is available at our Jones Bros construction project sites across the UK.

Qualifications that can be Gained

• BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering or,

• BSc (Hons) Construction Management or

• BSC (Hons) Quantity Surveying

• Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card

• Peripheral qualifications including Health and Safety Awareness and First Aid Training.

Outline of Apprenticeship programme

Year 1 Apprentices (HNC)

First 12 Months (Start September 2024)

• Week 1 Company onboarding, IT issue, training including document management systems, Finance systems, Cyber and GDPR
awareness, Health & Safety.

• Week 2 until college starts the apprentice engineers and quantity surveyors will go project civil engineering sites for
experience and introduction (Site Work Experience).

• College part 1 – In November college starts for 10-11 Weeks to start a HNC course. On completion the 1st Year Apprentices
will report to the Jones Bros training centre in Denbigh to complete 2 weeks of training that includes:

• Cat & Gene

• Setting Out

• First aid

• Fire Marshal training

• SSSTS

• Jones Bros BMS training

• Advanced COINS training.

On completion of this the apprentices will go to civil engineering project sites and commercial teams to gain valuable work
experience throughout.

Year 2 Apprentices (HND)

• In January of the second year the apprentices return to college for another 10-to-11-week block to start a HND in their
chosen course.

• On completion of the second college phase the apprentices will go back to civil engineering project sites across the UK to
continue developing work experience.

Year 3 Apprentice (top up degree)

• In the January of year 3 the apprentices will return to college to complete a top up degree in their chosen course. This will
be for another 10-to-11-week block.

• On completion of the college phase apprentices will go back to civil engineering projects and continue to finish any degree
course work and work experience.

Year 4 Apprentice to Qualified

In April of their fourth year, upon successful completion of one of the following degree courses, the apprentice could be
considered for a contract as either a Jones Bros Civil Engineer or Quantity Surveyor:

• BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering

• BSc (Hons) Construction Management

• BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying

Duration of Apprenticeship

The entire program may require up to four years for completion.

Progression

Successful completion of your Jones Bros higher apprenticeship can lead to you becoming a Site Engineer or Quantity Surveyor. With
career advancement into project or commercial management. Many of our past trainee engineers and quantity surveyors have
progressed to be Site Agents, Project and Commercial managers responsible for multi-million-pound civil engineering schemes
throughout the UK.

Continual professional development is encouraged, and we may support you through further academic study of degree and master’s
qualifications. Once academic qualifications have been achieved, progression to professional qualifications with the Institute of
Civil Engineers (ICE) can follow.

What we are looking for

• As a guide applicants should possess at least 2 A levels with a focus on Maths and English or an equivalent BTEC Level 3
qualification in the relevant field

• A full UK driving licence and the ability to get yourself to project sites and Coleg Cambria, Bersham Road in Wrexham is
essential for this apprenticeship.
