This is an exciting opportunity to work towards becoming a clinical specialist Occupational therapist within the highly specialised and well established deaf mental health service based at the Barberry in Birmingham.
We are seeking an occupational therapist with past clinical experience in mental health alongside previous experience or interest in working with people from the deaf community.
This is a 18-24 month development post that provides the opportunity to progress from a band 6 to band 7, offering support and opportunities to develop the specialist skills and experience required to work in this area including BSL training.
The right candidate will need to be highly motivated and committed to complete the target activities relating to the development process.
The post provides an opportunity to work both with inpatients and the community in the West Midlands area with service users who are deaf, have other sensory and physical health needs and are concurrently in need of acute mental health services.
To manage a caseload of service users with complex sensory, physical and mental health needs, using evidence based/service user centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
As part of the role as a clinical specialist OT, you will be responsible for assessment and completion of comprehensive OT formulation and treatment plan. You will collaborate with and team on evaluation, audit and research in this specialised field.
Within the service, you will work alongside the MDT in the development and delivery of group and 1:1 therapeutic interventions; provide specialist assessments for both the inpatient population and a small caseload of community based service users.
You will supervise and work closely with the ward OT assistant and have a sound understanding of deaf culture and the diverse needs of this client group, and ensure this is reflected in the meaningful therapeutic activities on offer on the ward and assessments and interventions undertaken.
You will also hold a small community based caseload and be able to travel within the region .
You will be skilled communicator and be willing to prioritise working towards achieving level 2 in BSL within the first two years of practice and be able to work closely with interpreters.
It is preferential but not essential that you have experience of deaf culture however it is essential that you are willing to develop your knowledge base within this area.
