Summary


An exciting opportunity has arisen within the NHSE funded Chailey Communication Aid Service, for a Rehabilitation Engineering Apprentice to join the multi-disciplinary team. You will be working with a team of highly specialist Clinical Scientists, Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and assistants who assess, provide and maintain communication aids and access to technology for adults and children in Sussex and Surrey who meet the NHS England referral criteria.

You will be required to meet competency and learning targets each year and complete the Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate Apprenticeship over a period of two years and two months. On successful completion of the course, competency targets and end point assessment, the apprentice will be eligible to join the Academy for Healthcare Science accredited Associate Register at Level 4. This role will allow you to acquire clinical and technical knowledge in the field of Clinical Engineering, and the specific areas of communication aids and equipment management.

This post is situated within a specialist communication aid service. The client group currently served have severe and complex communication difficulties and often associated complex physical disabilities. They require specific communication aids and technology to enable to them to access it which may need adaptations or bespoke design.







You will work as part of the team to prepare and issue equipment ready for supply and support the team in the mounting of equipment to seating. You will also provide technical assistance to the Chailey Communication Aid Service (CCAS) team as required.

You will work with the team in the development of processes relating to the communication aid stores, and to take responsibility for ensuring the stock levels within stores are maintained at an operational level, and the equipment is of an acceptable quality.

You will participate in a structured program of training which will include on the job experience, paid study leave, external training courses and completion of the Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science when enrolment is available. The apprenticeship fees are fully funded by this post.

The post holder will develop an understanding of work undertaken by CCAS, its impact on stock requirements and the role of the clinical engineering apprentice. You will develop and maintain a working knowledge of the assistive technology available to meet the needs of communication aid service users. You will also learn how to evaluate new equipment to assess its technical quality, design, specification, effectiveness and cost.

The post holder will be part of a team who undertake the inspection of goods in and develop stores related processes and procedures as necessary. You will gain an awareness of safety standards and the safety issues associated with communication aid provision and wheelchair mounting, learning to support the team using technical skills in the mounting, preparation and supply of equipment.

The post holder will be expected to visit patients at their place of residence/education to undertake planned, preventative maintenance on equipment. In addition, there will be appointments to adjust mechanical equipment and provide routine mounting of our technology.

The post holder will learn how to maintain stores to meet service needs. You will learn how to ensure that any equipment used by clients meets statutory requirements, is fit for purpose, functions correctly and where required is calibrated/serviced.

The post holder will maintain a competency log/portfolio with the support of their Line Manager. It is expected that the apprentice will actively look for relevant training opportunities in addition to participating in training that has been identified.

There are two adverts for this position, an apprentice and a qualified equivalent, only one post will be appointed.

This role is a fixed term apprenticeship. Although the role is banded at a Band 4 level, Annex 21 of Agenda for Change applies;

This means your salary will be as follows;

Year 1- 70% of the top of the pay band

Year 2- 75% of the top of the pay band
