Nature, the world’s most authoritative science journal, seeks an experienced editor for our daily newsletter, Nature Briefing.

Nature Briefing is a round-up of science news, opinion, and analysis, from Nature and beyond, handpicked and summarized for the global scientific community.


The successful candidate will support the Briefing Senior Editor to research, report and write content for the daily newsletter. They will also assist on the wider family of subject-specific Briefing newsletters, with the opportunity to be lead editor on one of these weekly newsletters. They will suggest new ideas for content that will appeal to our audience and help us reach new readers. They will work with, and be supported by, Nature’s team of award-winning journalists and editors, as well as specialists in product development, technology, and marketing.


They will develop an excellent understanding of Nature’s core audience and the global news agenda. They will become adept at filtering journalism and opinion content published around the world to find stories that make essential reading for scientists. They will be skilled in efficient, accurate reporting and writing, and comfortable working to tight and shifting deadlines. They will have a clear understanding of, and ambition for, digital publishing and innovation. They will be committed to writing with integrity, trustworthiness, respect for readers and principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. They may also be involved in the production of other news or summary content for Nature.

Responsibilities

Work closely with the Briefing Senior Editor to report and write content for the daily Briefing. This will include selecting must-read news stories, opinion pieces, research analysis and other content for inclusion in the Briefing.
Support the Briefing Senior Editor and other staff in the creation of subject-specific weekly Briefings.
Option to take on ownership of a weekly Briefing, researching content and writing for it each week.
Deputize for the Briefing Senior Editor in their absence.
Work closely with the editors of Nature’s magazine and journal content to select content for the Briefing.
Maintain broad knowledge of key issues in science, science policy, the scientific community and world current affairs.
Work with the art and multimedia teams on image selection and the development of graphics and multimedia content.
Write and edit copy to make it tight, coherent and compelling, working to tight deadlines.
Write compelling headlines, standfirsts, captions and other accompanying text.
Work with all necessary digital tools to edit, post and publish the Briefing.
Work with the Briefing Senior Editor to expand and adapt Nature’s content and help develop novel ways to reach audiences.
Work with the Chief Editor of Audience and Engagement to learn about our audience and how to produce content of interest to them, as well as how to reach new audiences.
Contribute actively to team discussions, idea generation and the development of editorial strategy.
Help liaise with the legal team to handle content with legal sensitivities as necessary.
Contribute to broader editorial strategy discussions across the magazine and company, as necessary.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Essential

Proven experience in writing compelling copy for a digital audience, ideally to daily deadlines.
Excellent writing, reporting, and editing skills.
Ability to identify news, research papers, opinion and other content of interest to Nature’s readers.
Excellent time management and organizational skills; ability to work to tight, relentless deadlines; ability to react quickly to breaking news.
Enthusiasm for, and basic fluency in, an array of science topics and fields.
Understanding of big issues in science, science policy, the scientific community and world current affairs.
Understanding of the interests and concerns of Nature’s audience of working research scientists.
Good interpersonal skills and ease working with colleagues internationally.

Desirable

Newsroom experience, preferably in a fast-paced environment.
Command and comfort with journalistic values and best practices including libel law.
Good understanding of the international research, science policy and funding landscape.
Knowledge of developments in digital publishing and innovation.
