The successful applicant will have a minimum of 3 years post HCPC registration experience and have a keen interest in all aspects of histopathology and a wider understanding of the broader issues at play within busy multi-disciplinary diagnostic service.

As a senior biomedical scientist, the potential to continually develop leadership skills and experience of laboratory quality management processes is expected and supported. The applicant will have proven experience supervising, training and managing staff, as well as a clear understanding of UKAS ISO:15189 accreditation standards. Ideally the successful applicant will be familiar with tinctorial methodologies, frozen tissue work and immunohistochemistry.

We currently hold UKAS Accreditation ISO:15189, and this post supports the Quality Lead as well as acting as the deputy to the Chief BMS in all matters pertaining to histological methods.

You will be expected to provide us with examples from work experience and/or personal life which demonstrate these values through your behaviour.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the team within Pathology at the Trust and to help shape future strategy and services for our local population. All in all, a great place to work, to live, to raise a family and to achieve a positive work life balance.

Cellular Pathology services have been integrated across East Kent for several years. Laboratory services are based at the WHH, Ashford. We provide histopathology, non-gynaecological cytology and autopsy services to EKHUFT and general practitioners within the region.

Cellular pathology is known for its strong team spirit and open friendly culture. There is great emphasis on cross communication between the technical and diagnostic teams.

Cellular pathology as a whole, including mortuary staff, incorporates a team of 84 staff. From consultant pathologists, to assistant healthcare scientists. From consultant biomedical scientists reporting alongside the consultants, to admin support and clerical staff. The diversity of staff within the discipline is all incorporated into the management of the quality of service offered, with the aim of putting the patient first.

The cellular pathology service is UKAS accredited to ISO15189 standards and the mortuary service appropriately HTA accredited.

The Senior BMS Laboratory Lead will be a key member of the team charged with overseeing the throughput of workflow through the main histopathology laboratory. The objective is that the Laboratory becomes more effective in both time management and quality management and meets both regulatory and accreditation requirements.

The position is designed to minimise the time between tissue dissection and the issuing of diagnostic slides to reporting staff, so as to effectively maximise the time available to pathologists to meet the turn-around-time expectations prescribed by the Royal College of Pathologists.

The Laboratory Lead will have the skills and ability to promote quality and effective training strategies and within all areas of the Department.
