Summary


· Conduct a wide range of physiological measurement investigations as offered by the department including, but not limited to, oesophageal manometry, oesophageal pH and pH impedance studies and hydrogen and methane breath testing with scope to expand and start an anorectal physiology service eventually.

· Act as an independent practitioner with advanced clinical skills including communication, patient preparation, manipulation of equipment and where required, using sensitive invasive techniques.

· Support the provision of a comprehensive bowel behavioural therapy service within the pelvic floor multidisciplinary team to include, but not limited to, patient education sessions, advice and medication review, biofeedback techniques and rectal irrigation demonstration once an anorectal physiology service is established.

· Produce advanced high quality diagnostic reports based on tests undertaken and keep accurate and clear records of any advice or treatments given. Work as part of relevant multi-disciplinary teams reporting back on test results and treatments and contributing to discussions on patient management based on tests performed and treatment given within the service.
• Highly specialist in-depth knowledge and understanding of current legislation and regulations pertinent to working area and the protection of staff, patients and members of the public.
• Knowledge of legislation, standards and safety principles relating to the relevant area.
• Advanced knowledge of working area enabling post holder to advise on the appropriateness of techniques, and to collaborate with clinicians in their interpretation and reporting.
• The post holder will assist with the training of junior members of staff and scientific trainees.
• To communicate highly complex, scientific, mathematical, statistical and regulatory knowledge and advice to medical staff, other clinical scientists and medical technologists.
• To have the scientific skills to interpret clinical and scientific results and form a judgement on their significance.
• Contribute to the analysis of national and international guidelines and recommendations to develop or improve procedures and protocols relevant to the area of work.

The Frimley Health GI physiology Unit in Heatherwood Hospital is a 1-year-old service in development catering for Oesophageal Physiology and Hydrogen Breath testing, with two reporting consultant surgeons and two specialist endoscopy nurses performing the tests and training through AGIP towards a clinical scientist qualification. The service takes referrals from Heatherwood, Wexham Park and Frimley Park Hospitals in Frimley Health ICB which service a population of just under 1 million. For wireless capsule pH testing the Unit also takes referrals from neighbouring Trusts such as Ashford and St Peter’s. There are plans to further expand the service to include Anorectal Physiology.

• Good report writing and presentation skills, including the production of scientific papers, reports and conference presentations.
• Knowledge of governance issues including ethical and regulatory considerations.
• Ability to give technical advice to colleagues, senior clinicians and other health professionals.
• Ability to carry out research and development work as part of a team.
• Teaching, training and mentoring skills.
• The ability to undertake complex calculation, data analysis and to issue reports on quantitative techniques.
• To communicate highly complex procedures in simple terms to patients, their relatives and other health care professionals.
• To communicate highly complex, scientific, mathematical, statistical and regulatory knowledge and advice to medical staff, other clinical scientists and medical technologists.
• To provide accurate written reports of investigations performed.
• Communicate sensitive information and tests results only to appropriate staff.
• To liaise with colleagues, medical staff, other health professionals, Trust support services and equipment suppliers as appropriate.
