Summary

The University of Reading is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and ambitious researcher to work on the Climate Change Impact on Midlatitude Cyclone Intensity, Tracks and Impacts (CLIM-CITI) project.
Fixed term post, up to 24 months.
Extratropical cyclones in the North Atlantic storm track region cause significant economic damage each year due to their strong winds and heavy rainfall. However, despite advancements, the sixth IPCC assessment report (AR6) highlights ongoing uncertainties in predicting changes in the North Atlantic storm track, hindering effective decision-making on climate adaptation by governments and industries. This uncertainty partly stems from limitations in how extratropical cyclones are represented in climate models. To address this challenge, a shift in approach is necessary, moving beyond assessments of average storm tracks and extratropical cyclone intensities. CLIM-CITI will explore the structural features and intensification mechanisms of individual extratropical cyclones shaping the storm tracks in reanalysis, historical climate model simulations and future climate projections. The ultimate objective is
to improve the accuracy of future climate projections of storm tracks.

The ideal candidate will have:

- An interest in extratropical meteorology
- Numeracy skills and experience working with large datasets

- Experience in research (PhD or equivalent attainment) in a numerical subject e.g. physics, maths, meteorology, environmental science
- Personal skills to work both independently and as part of a team
- Confidence in communicating findings within the research community.

You will work with scientists within the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading. You will also work with scientists from the University of Exeter, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the UK Met Office.
Closing date: 16 June
Interviews will be held: 5 July
