Summary




The Senior Sister will be the clinical and managerial lead for Ward 23 Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. Will take responsibility for the clinical and budgetary management of the ward/department and the provision of nursing care. Will act as Deputy to the Matron and will take responsibility for the provision of nursing care and management of patient care.

Will be responsible for running nurse led clinics and provide diagnoses of problems in early pregnancy and emergency Gynaecological conditions including the use of Ultrasound scanning and will be responsible for the management plan and discharging of patients.

Acts in a manner that upholds the values of the Trust and that of the profession ensuring that service delivered contributes to supporting the principles of clinical governance.

The Senior Sister/Clinical Nurse Specialist has overall responsibility for the provision of excellent care with compassion for patients, relatives and visitors who are cared for within the unit

To ensure the provision of excellent care with compassion the unit Manager is responsible for:

Running Nurse led clinics in the Early Pregnancy Assessment unit including performing Early Pregnancy Ultrasound.

Ensuring that the nursing team and care support team within their ward or department are adequately resourced and organised.

Ensuring the nursing team and care support team are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care with compassion in line with the Trust's Values & Nursing Professional Framework.

Leading and developing the department nursing team by being a visible and strong role model providing leadership and direction to the team,

You will be responsible for the highest standards in safety, quality and clinical governance, whilst delivering outstanding patient care.

The post holder is will be required to work across the MDT, leading and managing our nursing teams in collaboration with the other Clinical Nurse Specialists to maintain high standards of nursing care whilst maintaining the wellbeing of our nursing team

1. Act as a Clinical Nurse / leader to ensure the needs of patients are recognised and met by the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care. Will take steps to deal with any difficulty in the care process and in implementing planned care.
1. Act as a point of liaison for multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working to achieve the best possible outcome for patient care. Will take appropriate action to remedy any deficiencies in service provision from other agencies.
1. Provide registered nurse support to junior nursing staff.
1. To order and undertake clinical investigations and make plans for appropriate treatment or admission or discharge and ensure appropriate follow up is arranged.
2. To assist and enable patients to make lifestyle changes.

6. Undertake additional training as required to meet the needs of patients and register any additional skills acquired because of enhanced practice.


1. Review and participate in any relevant research applicable to the speciality.
1. Provide information and support patients undergoing treatment.
1. To participate in Health Promotion activities in relation to national and local guidelines.
1. Develop protocols/guidelines for the service in conjunction with the lead consultant.
1. To develop, administer and monitor medication according to Patient Group Directions.
1. Provide clinical support within the early pregnancy and acute gynaecology clinics as necessary.

13.To undertakeUltrasound scanningof patients with Early pregnancy conditions.

14.To diagnose ectopic pregnancy, complete miscarriage, incomplete miscarriage, molar pregnancy and assess and provide treatment to patient accordingly.

15.To clinically examine patients who are experiencing problems in pregnancy and diagnose and treat accordingly. To include the identification of likely ectopic pregnancy which would require emergency theatre to ensure patient safety.

16.Ensure that the ward/area maintains compliance with the Health and Social Care Act 2008 [previously known as the ‘Hygiene Code ’] at all times. Monitor compliance with key infection control policies, including the High Impact Interventions, and ensure appropriate actions are taken. Lead on ward/area Infection Control issues and take responsibility for ensuring that any lapses are reported and dealt with appropriately. Support and assist the Infection Control Team when required, to ensure compliance with infection prevention and control practices.

17.Provide registered nurse support to the nursing team and give advice and guidance to medical staff.

18.Maintains the Trust’s aims and objectives within the clinical setting.

19.Accountable and responsible for accurate and legible record keeping in accordance with local policies and NMC guidelines.

20.Administer Intravenous drugs in accordance with Trust policies.
