This is the perfect opportunity to join our team of consultants and become part of the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust. You will have the chance to develop your skills and confidence under the guidance of an inspiring team.

As our new Consultant Acute Physician, you will join our well-established team in the delivery of acute medical care across the Medical Assessment, Short Stay and Ambulatory Care Units. You will be experienced in Acute Internal Medicine or General Internal Medicine recognised by the EEC.

Your main base will be at Peterborough City Hospital, however, cross-site working will be required.

You will become an essential part of a great multidisciplinary team working collaboratively across a co-located ED, AAU/MAU and Ambulatory Care Unit. We are experienced in making rapid clinical decisions while maintaining high standards of patient care.

We have created well-established pathways and policies that we frequently see replicated at conferences as ‘ground-breaking’. An integrated Same Day Emergency Care services is in development providing rapid assessment of patients and streaming them to appropriate treatment pathways.

We believe that anything is possible. Flexibility is the key to a happy team that can provide better patient care. All our roles are offered full-time and/or part-time with cross-site services.

The job plan is anticipated to contain 10 PAs (8.5 DCC+ 1.5 SPA) with an additional allocation of 0.5 PA if you are qualified as an educational supervisor and have trainees allocated. There will also be the option of additional PAs to be discussed. The on-call rota is 1:6.

You will provide high-quality, safe and compassionate care, to the acutely ill medical patients admitted to our hospital and provide them with the best possible experience during their admission.

Teaching is an important element of your role. You will be actively involved in teaching, training and supervising the doctors, nurses, and students while promoting a positive and supportive atmosphere.

Clinical governance activities such as audits, mortality review and appraisal processes are key to your responsibilities, ensuring that the clinical guidelines are updated and adhered to in line with evidence-based best practice.

The exact job plan will be agreed between the Divisional Operations Director, the Associate Divisional Directors and the post holder, and its structure could differ between both hospitals.



The position is advertised as 10 PAs (8.5 DCC+1.5 SPA) where additional SPAs can be considered depending on additional roles undertaken. The option of flexible and Less than Full Time working is already well established in the department. Additional SPAs are routinely allocated for additional responsibilities, such as educational supervision.

Clinical sessions are worked on AAU, ACU and MSSU at Hinchingbrooke.

Half day, full day, late shifts and weekend clinical shifts may all be considered within job planning and arranged in a way to suit the post holder and the needs of the department.



Shifts include Monday to Friday:
• 0800-1600 (most shifts)
• 1200-2000
• Two consultants prefer long days 0800-2000

Shifts may be fixed or rotated to suit personal circumstance. Job plans may be weekly or annualised at a 40-week baseline (320 clinical PAs per year). The majority of shifts can be taken during normal working hours and there is currently opportunity to work additional shifts via the Trust bank, should the post holder so desire, giving the opportunity for a considerable uplift in salary.

The work pattern is very likely to continue to evolve over time to ensure that the service matches the demand. We will always carefully negotiate any changes to an individual’s job plan to ensure that they maintain their flexibility.
