Summary

Appointment to Band 8a Principal Clinical Scientist Post will require you to have Clinical Biochemistry experience, to be HCPC registered as a Clinical Scientist and have an MSc or equivalent in Clinical Biochemistry and Part 1 FRCPath. Appointment to Band 7 Senior Clinical Scientist post will require you to have Clinical Biochemistry experience, to be HCPC registered as a Clinical Scientist and have an MSc or equivalent in Clinical Biochemistry. Trainees eligible for HCPC registration by Autumn 2024 will be considered for appointment with automatic progression to Band 7 on registration. Career progression and training will be actively supported, with full support provided for completion of FRCPath. In order for the post holder to progress to Band 8a following appointment at Band 7, they will be required to achieve Part 1 FRCPath and the necessary competencies within a three-year period. Job Purpose Band 8a To assist in delivery of a quality, cost effective and patient focussed service from a combination of specialist areas within the department. To provide highly specialised advice and interpretation, and to perform final authorisation of patient reports for hospital and primary care clinical staff. To carry out research, development and audit in the field of clinical biochemistry To be departmental Duty Biochemist To provide scientific supervision of work within specialist departmental teams which may include; endocrine/*SAS, Core Automated, Special Assays, Newborn/Maternal Screening, Paediatrics and ** POCT. To perform specialised, nationally accredited analyses on body fluids, sometimes involving direct patient contact. To maintain standards and effect improvements to the service. * SAS = Supraregional Assay Service. This service comprises of a smallnumber of highly specialised laboratories which are designated and accredited to provide specialist tests on a national (i.e. supraregional) basis. Both analytical and an interpretation/advice service are provided and new 'leading edge' assays are developed.** POCT = Point of Care Testing. Diagnostic testing that is performed near to or at the site of the patient care with the result leading to possible change in the care of the patient.
