We have a very exciting opportunity for a Weekend and Weekend Night Shift Manager to join us at our Midlands Super Hub in Crick, near Daventry, and help us to continue to improve and deliver the best service.

The Midlands Super Hub is Royal Mail’s largest site, processing over 1 million parcels daily and moving 50% of the nation’s mail through our network of Mail Centres and Parcel Hubs for delivery both via road and rail through our on-site Rail Platform.

We are looking for a passionate, motivated, and experienced Shift Operations Manager to join our Midlands Hub leadership team and be part of our future. You will play an instrumental part in the fast-paced environment of the Hub, managing and leading our Hub teams to build trusted relationships and delivering a world class automated operation, with the capability to process 60,000 parcels an hour and with further expansion planned to process 90,000 parcel an hour.

About the role

Reporting to the Senior Operations Manager of the Midlands Super Hub, the Shift Manager is a member of the Senior Hub Leadership team, and is responsible for operations across the shift, including overall responsibility for the flow room and engineering, input to the processing strategy, delivery of engagement and people initiatives, overseeing APSS Cross Dock and Rail operations, ensuring safe and efficient running whilst leading a team of Cross Dock / Rail Managers and Team Managers, and working alongside the Shift Flow and Engineering Manager for the successful achievement of safety, quality of service, productivity, automation performance / utilisation (APSS), and employee targets.

The Shift Manager will have excellent commercial understanding, focusing their decisions on data, and lead their team to run a successful APSS operation to workplan. They will also continuously improve and challenge others to maximise flow, eliminate waste, and reduce downtime.

The Shift Manager will make an impact across the Hub, directly managing 12 staff, including a section leader and team managers, and indirectly managing ~ 500 frontline colleagues (increasing during seasonal peaks), and possess control over a frontline operational budget and be a key contributor to achieving other staff and non-staff budgets.

The Shift Manager will also be required to:

  • Ensure risk assessments for the shift are completed, safe systems of work are in place, and processes are compliant with safety requirements, operated in a safe manner, and always following the set principles of Continuous Improvement.
  • Be responsible for shift hub budget and overall responsibility for the effective running of the shift, driving the achievement of metrics and targets for the scorecard areas of people, customer, performance, and financial.
  • Be responsible for the operation and workplan for the shift, including optimum resource requirements against forecast workload, in conjunction with other Shift Managers, Planning Manager, Shift Flow Manager, and Engineering Managers.
  • Organise and manage shift activity to maximise automation throughput by ensuring correct allocation of resource against shift plan, the correct mix of induction items, management of outfeeds, and escalation of maintenance issues.
  • Effectively manage all people related activity and targets across the shift.
  • Work closely with Shift Flow Manager and Engineering Manager to drive improvements in APSS performance, minimising downtime and interruptions, and manage efficient Cross Dock and Rail operations.
  • Undertake weekly performance reviews of the team, ensuring visibility of performance throughout the shift, and supporting the Hub target culture of "One Hub, One Team".
  • Work with Trade Union representatives and local involvement groups to create effective trust-based partnerships which both supports people to deliver great performance and creates a harmonious working environment, where everyone feels valued and reflect our core values.
  • Be responsibility for weekly Strategic Involvement resourcing meeting with local Trade Union representatives and all joint working requirements.
  • Leading any deployment of change across the shift by using a project management approach, including stakeholder management, communications, tracking of progress against plan, risk management, and tracking of achievement of benefits.
  • When required, be the Dedicated Person In Control (PIC).

About You

To be truly successful in this role, you’ll possess the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Planning and project management skills, with the ability to develop plans, understand risks, monitor progress, and plan deployment, achieving selected benefits and time constraints
  • Data analysis and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate APSS performance using KPIs and metrics, identify trends and shifts in performance, and develop solutions and make improvements
  • Stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with a range of senior and key stakeholders to achieve business benefit and objectives
  • Strong drive, enthusiasm, and resilience, with the willingness to constantly strive to improve performance, ability to build strong working relationships and energise colleagues, and ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate and explain complex topics clearly by utilising outstanding verbal and written communication
  • Excellent presentational skills, utilised to deliver effective and engaging presentations to a variety of audiences
  • Strong IT literacy and budget management experience
  • Experience implementing Continuous Improvement techniques and change management to minimise waste and downtime
  • Be a persuasive leader with a developed ability to identify and resolve problems
  • Proven experience of successfully running a large operation, desirably within automation
  • Experiencing of leading a large team and working as a second-line manager
  • PIC trained
  • Able to work with complex system data

Desirably:

  • Knowledge and experience working as a shift manager in an automated working environment
  • Knowledge of automation, mech performance metrics, and the role of engineering in effective automation performance
  • Proven experience of driving performance and change within a unionised environment
  • Knowledge of automated environment and parcel site benefits, and flow room, supervisory control, and data acquisition (SCADA)
  • Experience at a Rail terminal
  • Major change experience

Shift pattern

Oversight of both the Weekend and Weekend Night shifts of the Hub, Thursday to Sunday, and a degree of flexibility to meet the needs of the business.

Core hours are Thursday 4pm - 9pm, Friday 12pm - 10pm, Saturday 3:30pm - 4:30am, and Sunday 3:30pm - 4:30am.
