Summary

We recognise the challenges that people with protected characteristics may experience on the job market and in their career progression. We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including ethnic minorities, people with a disability, and people with gender diverse identities.

Are you strong leader who is enthusiastic about supporting, developing and coaching their team to deliver and excel in their roles?

Do you have experience of working in public bodies or a governance role?

Would you like to step into a new role that allows you to work with a broad range of organisations in Transport?

If so, then we would love for you to apply!

We deal with everything from the physical transport of goods and people to future technologies, regulating industries, securing the transport network against threats and building national infrastructure. The Department’s public bodies lead the delivery of our major investments and core services to the public. If you would like a role in the heart of DfT that exposes you to a broad range of organisations and their work, then look no further than the Public Bodies Centre of Expertise (PBCE).

The PBCE is responsible for the departmental approach to working with the DfT Family of circa 30 public bodies. We support a community of practice for DfT sponsors and shareholders to support them to optimise governance and enable best delivery outcomes from our partner organisations. We do this through sharing best practice, developing and disseminating tools and guidance, holding a range of training sessions, managing a NED engagement programme and working with the centre to co-develop central initiatives. The PBCE also holds a Portfolio Office that is responsible for developing public bodies strategy, directorate reporting and business management. The PBCE is part of the Shareholding, Appointments and Inquiries Directorate and we work closely with our partner teams: Public Appointments and Public Body Reviews.

The post holder will lead the Corporate Governance and Sponsorship and Portfolio Office aspects of the Public Bodies Centre of Expertise and is a key role to enabling accountable, effective organisations and optimal collaboration across DfT; it is a real chance to make a difference.

Responsibilities

Key accountabilities of the role include:

  • Leading a team to ensure that they can deliver, whilst supporting their development and well-being.
  • Horizon scanning and forward planning to ensure that the DfT sponsorship and shareholding community are set up for success.
  • Working with the centre to ensure that central commissions and initiatives are reflective of the needs of the Department.
  • A practical, accurate and supportive advice, consultancy, guidance and training service to the Department.
  • A NED engagement programme working with the Public Appointments Team, Departmental Board Secretariat Team and Strategy Unit.
  • A portfolio approach to those bodies which are within the Directorate to maximise the benefit of co-location.
  • Comprehensive and accurate Directorate and Departmental reporting.
  • Excellent business management to the Directorate.
