Job Description
Summary
My son is a friendly, outgoing, enthusiastic autistic adult. He is in need of a PA/mentor for 20 hours per week to help him be more independent within the home, community and employment.
His hobbies and interests are playing bass and lead guitar, Hornby, classic cars, motorbikes and scooters and going to the gym. He would like to explore possibility of creating art/art therapy and continuing to work on woodwork skills.
Your role will be to help support my son to develop skills and build confidence in his ability to achieve his goals, create and support structure in his daily routine to improve mental wellbeing.
We would like you to support my son to:
Access and engage in work, training, education or volunteering.
Manage and maintain nutrition.
Develop and maintain relationships.
Be able to make use of the home safely.
Be appropriately clothed Managing and maintaining nutrition.
Maintain a habitable home environment.
Maintain personal hygiene.
Make use of necessary facilities or services in the local community including public transport and recreation facilities or services
Manage appointments and responding to correspondence.
Manage finances and budgeting.
Candidate qualities:
• Male due to personal care needs and sometimes challenging behaviour.
• Have a good understanding of Autism and/or mental health.
• Having experience in working with young people with Autism and mental health would be an advantage as would experience in working with young adults out of employment and training.
• Able to work with a graded and enabling approach to build on the skills that the young man has. This approach should be patient, supportive and collaborative.
• Able to tolerate the young man smoking in the workplace.
• Respectful of the employer’s privacy and confidentiality.
• Reliable, with good time keeping and be able to provide a consistent service.
• Fit and healthy to undertake the required duties.
• Patience and possess excellent interpersonal skills.
• Honest and cheerful.
• Creative.
• Able to speak and read English to a reasonable standard.
• Legally permitted to work in the United Kingdom.
• Able to always work to high standards of Health & Safety
• safeguarding training or awareness is preferred but that training can be provided.
Other Personal Qualities:
Empathy, kindness and understanding.
Employee Duties:
• Medication prompting/administering - requires support with all aspects of medication management including supervision and compliance with medication in the community due to risk of harm in the context of a deterioration in mental health. They will require support to develop skills with ordering their medication.
• Personal grooming - will require supervision with showering, ensuring bathroom does not flood and equipment used safely.
• Eating and drinking assistance - requires support to develop and build upon his meal preparation skills. This is an area in which the young adult is keen to develop.
• Other relevant duties as required- may require prompting to attend to personal care in the context of a deterioration in his mental health.
• Cooking - Prompting and supervision is required during hot meal preparation to ensure heat sources/taps are switched off and used safely.
• Transportation - support to use public transport or use the PA’s vehicle.
Additional duties:
• To accompany when accessing social and leisure activities e.g. to the gym.
• To accompany to doctors/hospital appointments when required.
• To accompany when clothes-buying.
• To accompany on trips out e.g. to driving lessons and to social events such as: local gym,
Cinema, going to café’s, beach, craft fairs, local visits, out shopping for fun, attending social events, attending therapies.
• The above duties will involve driving the young man in the PA’s car and by public transport.
• Employment and/or training – The young man requires support to find and access employment and/or training opportunities and support to engage with work or training. Employer requires clear guidelines/code of conduct at the beginning of any placement to ensure understanding and expectation of him. They require support to manage any issues that may arise
