Summary

Applicants are invited to join our highly regarded and successful Wirral Academic Surgical Program as General Surgical Research Fellows within the trust. This program has been extremely effective with many fellows (both UK and International graduates) obtaining National Training Numbers after completion of our programme.

We believe these research fellowship posts offer an outstanding opportunity for ambitious trainees to enhance their CVs in a supportive and structured environment and maximise their chances of successful entry to higher surgical training.

These posts are aimed at candidates who have completed Core Surgical training or are at Specialist Registrar level and are seeking a National Training Number.

We recognise the difficulties encountered by current trainees in obtaining higher surgical training and these posts are specifically designed to add value through education, research and improved clinical exposure.

Fellows are enrolled on the fully funded University of Edinburgh Master of Surgery (ChM) or the new MSc in Gastrointestinal Surgery delivered by the Trust in partnership with the University of Chester. Please note all tuition fees will be paid by the trust. The trust can also support the tuition fees and enrolment for the Post Graduate Certificate or Diploma in Medical Education.

Fellows enjoy protected research time in their job plan (2 PA) with the same allowances for annual leave as deanery trainees. Trainees also have access to a study leave allowance, separate from their tuition fees.

All new colleagues can expect to receive a warm and friendly Wirral welcome from the very first time they make contact with us. We are described as “competent and caring staff” by our patients.

Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is situated on The Wirral peninsula which has a stunning coastline and beautiful countryside surroundings, with great activities for its residents.

We are one of the largest and busiest acute Trusts in the North West of England, comprising of the Wirral’s only Emergency Department. We provide a high quality range of acute care services and employ over 6,000 staff, who serve a population of approximately 400,000 people across Wirral, Ellesmere Port, Neston, North Wales and the wider North West footprint.

We have approximately 855 beds trust-wide and our financial turnover is in excess of £337m.

The Wirral is easily accessible with excellent transport links including motorway, train, bus or ferry and within easy reach to the major cities of Liverpool, Chester and Manchester as well as neighbouring North Wales.

Rota: Research Fellows are part of a full shift, 1 in 10 rota with the Specialist Registrars

Applications from suitably qualified international trainees are also welcomed and encouraged.

Contract length: 12 months. These posts are extendable to two years dependent on successful completion of year one requirements of the ChM and satisfactory clinical performance

The post will commence in August 2024
