Summary

The role: An exciting opportunity has arisen as we seek to appoint a Trainee Depot Engineer to be based at our OFD (Oil & Fuel Depot) located at Campbeltown, Argyll & Bute, Scotland, which is a top tier COMAH site.

This is a newly created dual function role where the post holder must be able to function as a Mechanical Maintenance Technician, and have career aspirations to develop their engineering knowledge and capability to become the Depot Engineer in Campbeltown, ensuring the Agency’s standards of inspection and maintenance are upheld throughout the OPA assets, to ensure the OPA meets its obligations under COMAH legislation.

The post is initially a hands-on maintenance role with technical administration responsibilities, and covers supporting the maintenance function at Campbeltown, while developing both engineering based academic studies and engineering supervisory skills in order to take up the role of Depot Engineer as part of the site succession plan within approximately an 18-month period.

The Trainee Depot Engineer must be able to function independently as a mechanical maintenance technician as part of the depot maintenance team but also develop their engineering knowledge to eventually support/deputise and develop into the Depot Engineer role in Campbeltown. Initially wrench time for the role will be 80%. The role requires an effective individual who can demonstrate strong leadership, can positively engage all stakeholders and motivate staff, travel to other OPA OFDs with a focus on ensuring a positive culture and that safety standards are maintained at all times.

Responsibilities:

  • Comply with The Fundamental Principles of the Agency
  • Promote process safety leadership as the core of OPA’s culture
  • Contribute to the lead and direction of the Depot Maintenance Team to ensure that people individually and collectively achieve their potential in delivering business performance, ensure achievable but stretching objectives are set for individuals which are aligned to business goals
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships when representing the OPA with internal and external stakeholders including NCHQ, contractors, colleagues, members of the public and OPA management
  • Responsible for conducting routine maintenance tasks and maintenance for the site assets
  • Escalate conflicts and resource issues to the Assistant Engineer (Line manager)
  • Maintain plant equipment in order to maximise availability of fuel delivery of fuel to authorised demanders in line with relevant SLAs and OPA objectives and targets
  • Ensure estate management encompassing all aspects of maintenance, minor/major works and grounds management to the required standards
  • Willing to undertake Short Notice overtime and be part of a Rostered “On-Call” Team
  • Fault Finding and repair for OFD Depots; including plant and equipment, maintenance of plant and equipment
  • Carry out planned maintenance activities and defect rectification efficiently
  • Accountable for ensuring the compliance with the Planned Preventative Maintenance schedule of inspections for all site assets via Agility (CMMS)
  • Maintain plant equipment in order to maximise availability of fuel delivery of fuel to authorised demanders in line with relevant SLAs and OPA objectives and targets
  • Ensure that accurate maintenance activity and asset technical records are maintained for the depot facilities at all times. This should include but is not limited to site Piping and Instrument Diagrams, Electrical Distribution Drawings, and individual asset technical specifications

The candidate: You will already be an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Technician, fully experienced with the maintenance of process plant, and have a strong working knowledge around Engineering Maintenance Processes, with a thorough working knowledge of COMAH.

Ideally you will have a minimum qualification of ONC in an engineering discipline or in a relevant engineering craft/technician discipline, and ideally have served a recognised Modern Day Craft apprenticeship or equivalent, with at least three years’ experience in an engineering role within a high hazard industry.

You’ll need to be able to demonstrate first line management potential, leadership, communications and influencing skills, with a focus on ensuring all depot assets are maintained correctly, ensuring a positive safety culture is maintained.

A full (preferably clean) driving licence is essential for this post as some occasional travel will be required.
