The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is a centre of excellence for cancer care and has developed an advanced information system which allows capture of clinical patient activity. Structured data is required to help manage the Trust’s performance and support clinical audit. Most of the patient record is now stored on the Trust’s Hospital Information System (HIS), but much of this is textual and not in a suitable form for data analysis. Coded data is required on a number of clinical factors, particularly diagnosis, stage of disease and treatment with particular emphasis on data required to enable cancer waiting times to be monitored effectively. The main function of this post is to collect accurate, complete and up to date data. This involves interpreting clinical data, entering it onto the computer and liaising with other departments to help interpret the data. Some of the data collected will need to be coded using NHS coding systems.

In addition, robust processes need to be in place to assure the quality of data entered by users in various roles across the Trust. The second function of the post is to participate in this quality assurance by producing lists of missing and inaccurate data, feeding back on systematic errors, and in some circumstances updating data directly
