Description
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced Trading Standards Officer (L3Z2) to join our team. As a Trading Standards Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring fair trading practices and consumer protection within our organization. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a strong understanding of commercial law, excellent communication skills, and attention to detail.

As a Trading Standards Officer, you will play a key role in investigating and resolving complaints related to unfair trading practices, misleading advertisements, product labeling, and pricing discrepancies. You will also work closely with other departments to ensure compliance with industry regulations and promote fair competition.

In addition to your investigation work, you will have the opportunity to develop and deliver training programs for staff and stakeholders, as well as participate in industry conferences and workshops to stay updated on new regulations and best practices. Responsibilities
Conduct thorough investigations into complaints received, gathering evidence and interviewing relevant parties
Ensure compliance with relevant consumer protection laws, regulations, and codes of practice
Provide advice and guidance to businesses and consumers on their rights and responsibilities
Develop and deliver training programs for staff and stakeholders on trading standards issues
Monitor and enforce compliance with industry regulations, including product labeling and pricing accuracy
Collaborate with other departments to identify and mitigate potential risks and challenges
Participate in industry conferences and workshops to stay updated on new regulations and best practices
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in law, business, or a related field
At least 3 years of experience working in a similar role, preferably within a regulatory or enforcement agency
Strong knowledge of consumer protection laws and regulations
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Proficient in using Microsoft Office applications and other relevant software

To carry out inspections, re-inspections and surveys and to be responsible for the investigation, enforcement and manage a caseload. To prepare and serve Statutory Notices and take enforcement action in line with the Council’s strategy and departmental enforcement policies. To report and/or advise where statutory action is not appropriate and to initiate prosecutions for failure to comply with statutory instruments where appropriate. To consult/negotiate with developers, landlords, contractors, business and other clients as appropriate, to ensure progress of casework. To carry out site visits, surveys, inspections and to attend Public Inquiries, courts of law, and tribunals.

You will deliver effective trading standards housing enforcement, leading on investigation and resolution of complex cases. Covering MEES, membership of Client Money Protection Schemes and Redress schemes, Tenants fees, Tenancy deposits, safety of let accommodation, types of letting arrangements/agreements and their contract formation and conduct with reference to the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 and the Fraud Act 2006. Visiting premises, ensuring legal compliance, identifying priorities, risks and impacts. Fostering relationships across a wide range of partners.

Mitigating against detrimental impacts of rogue landlords and agents, including mis-management of properties for illicit purposes, modern slavery, the environment and sustainability, fire, health and safety risks (particularly to the vulnerable and young people and children), the socio-economic impacts and cost of living.
