Summary


This post provides training towards in line with the curriculum for specialist certification in Cardiology (including the mandatory elements of General Internal Medicine). Training occurs at Hammersmith Hospital (particularly procedural training) and Charing Cross and St Mary’s Hospitals (particularly acute and in-patient training, with several aspects (such as imaging) taught across all sites. Trainees achieving sufficient clinical progress will be eligible for 20% research time to develop a funding proposal towards a PhD, with guidance from one of our world-leading cardiologists (chosen by the trainee).

This post is intended to attract candidates wishing to utilise the Portfolio Pathway (previously called CESR) to acquire specialist registration in Cardiology, which enables them to be geographically stable at a single world-class academic health sciences centre, while in parallel developing international-grade expertise in a subspeciality through a prestigious externally funded PhD and opportunities to exploit it further in dedicated postdoctoral research time.







The Fellow will initially divide their time between training in echocardiography (10%), angiography (10%), electrophysiology/devices procedures (5%), acute cardiology care (40%), chronic cardiology care (15%) and general internal medicine (20%). As the Fellow progresses, this distribution will change toa accommodate their training needs and their subspeciality interest. Each year, if the clinical progress meets expectations, the trainee will receive up to 20% dedicated research time to develop/revise/resubmit prestigious externally funded PhD proposals

Duties will include:
• In-patient management
• Outpatients (no more than 50 clinics per year)
• On-call duties
• Ward referrals
• Rapid-access chest pain clinic
• Echocardiography and non-invasive assessment
• Catheter lab work
• Participation in audit and other departmental clinical meetings

On-Call work

The postholder will contribute to the resident on-call rota for cardiology. This provides cover for in-patients, cardiological emergencies received via A&E, and urgent cardiology in-patient transfers. In addition, the post holder will be a key member of the primary angioplasty team when on call.

Cover for leave

There are cross-cover arrangements between the Cardiology SpRs. Appointees must coordinate annual and study leave to ensure that their planned sessions and ward duties are adequately covered by colleagues during their absence.
