Job Title: Personal Care Assistant

Responsible to: Directly accountable to and taking direction from the employer and the employer’s representative.

Hours: SCHOOL HOLIDAYS ONLY – 35 Hours per week

Work Pattern: Flexible to be agreed with employer

Hourly Rate of Pay: £12.00

Based at: Employers home in Hazlemere, out in the local community and supporting employer’s representative as required.

Job Purpose

1:1 with a young adult, who has complex learning disabilities and epilepsy. He is a term time student at a residential college and comes home in the college holidays. He is a full-time wheelchair user who is non-verbal. He can communicate using YES/NO labelled hands. We are looking for someone to build a trusting relationship with him, so that they can support him with daily living needs, personal care, and social engagement. He likes TV, chatting about himself and others, he enjoys trips out in the community, bowling, going for walks and generally being around people who will talk and include him in whatever is taking place. He is very sociable and likes to be part of things. It is important to him and his family that he is included as this supports his quality of life. He is currently nil-by-mouth and is fed a blended diet, through his gastrostomy.


Main duties

To support with:
- Personal care (washing, dressing, brushing teeth etc)
- Assisting medication, if required
- Rehabilitation
- Giving of his feeds and fluids via his gastrostomy, feeding will include the heating of pre-prepared blends.
- Washing up of syringes and feeding equipment. On occasions, light household tasks such as cleaning, changing the bed, washing, and ironing.
- Taking the young person shopping if that is what he would like to do.
- Transfers whilst in and out of the wheelchair.
- He has hoisting and a shower table for personal care and showering and into his bed.
- At bedtime he requires hoisting into bed and positioning into his sleep system.
- Support and attend health care appointments, if required by his representative.
- Support with social tasks of his choosing.
- To report any issues to the young person’s mother.
- To perform such other duties as may reasonably be required.

• A willingness to undergo any training highlighted by the employer.
• You should have some knowledge and understanding of risks.
• Have an awareness and knowledge of equal opportunities.

The post carries a 6 month’s probationary period, due to the nature of it being a term time holiday position.
